  • Patent number: 12031405
Abstract: A plug for wellbore tubing includes: an internal portion; a first external portion which surrounds the internal portion; and a second external portion disposed axially adjacent to the first external portion, with respect to a central longitudinal axis of the plug. The second external portion expands to: engage an interior surface of the wellbore tubing in response to a trigger as the plug displaces downhole through the wellbore tubing; and open a passage to permit a fluid to progress to the first external portion. The first external portion expands to engage the wellbore tubing in response to the expansion of the second external portion and upon contact with the fluid. A related method includes providing such a plug, and displacing the plug downhole in the wellbore tubing.

  • Publication number: 20240218768
Abstract: The laterals of a smart multilateral completion are divided into a number of compartments for improved monitoring and controlling of unwanted fluid production. The productivity index (PI) of each compartment is determined by conducting downhole tests utilizing the downhole liquid metering, real-time pressure measurements, and the electrical inflow control valve (ICV). The PIs and other testing results are used to calibrate a multiphase single well simulation model to select the optimum ICV opening setting at each compartment. The calibrated simulation model is used in a fluid dynamic simulator (e.g., PIPESIM) to generate simulation results based on different ICV opening settings. The optimum ICV opening setting is selected based on the simulated well production delivering the target oil rate while satisfying the constraints of (i) the maximum allowable liquid production rate from each compartment and (ii) the maximum allowable reservoir pressure drawdown all the compartments combined.

  • Publication number: 20240218785
Abstract: A method includes shutting in a well and connecting a pressure control system and a tool body to an adapted tubing hanger plug. The pressure control system, tool body, and adapted tubing hanger plug are installed into a borehole, which is then opened for fluid flow. A flow rate of the fluid flow is measured with a spinner. Temperature spikes are generated using a thermal generator, and a time for the temperature spikes to travel from the thermal generator to a temperature probe is measured. A flow rate of the fluid flow is calculated based on the time. Further, physical properties of the fluid flow are measured with sensors disposed within an electronics section of the tool body. Surface and subsurface safety valves are closed, and the adapted tubing hanger plug and the tool body are retrieved from the borehole. Data is downloaded for analysis.
