Abstract: A flame retardant polymer composition comprising 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-diphenylbutane, a halogenated bisimide corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## wherein Q is methylene or oxygen, X is chlorine or bromine, R is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1-5 carbon atoms, R' is hydrogen or methyl and R" is an organic group containing 1-15 carbon atoms, and a polypropylene polymer selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and copolymers containing at least 50% by weight of co-polymerized propylene monomer.
Abstract: A polymer composition containing a flame retardant amount of tribromocumene. The polymer is preferably polyurethane and may be either foamed or non-foamed.

Abstract: An additive flame retardant bisimide containing halogen atoms and ammonium acid tetrahalophthalate, e.g. N,N'-bis(2-ethylene tetrabromophthalimide) ammonium acid tetrabromophthalate. These compounds are useful in a variety of polymeric compositions and demonstrate increased thermal stability. They also foam on decomposition with the evolution of gas thus readily lending themselves to the preparation of flame retardant coatings.
Abstract: A flame retardant thermoplastic polymer containing a flame retardant amount of a flame retardant additive mixture. The mixture is comprised of halogenated imide-containing polyols having the formula: ##STR1## and the corresponding ethers having the formula: ##STR2## wherein R is a hydrocarbon group having the valence n+2 and is selected from the group consisting of benzene groups, naphthalene groups and alicyclic hydrocarbon groups containing 5 to 10 carbon atoms, X is selected from the group consisting of bromine and chlorine, n is an integer from 1-6 and p is an integer from 2-6. The preferred flame retardant mixture is a derivative of tetrabromophthalic anhydride.
Abstract: (Cyclo)alkylenediammonium compounds corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is halogen, R is an alkylene or cycloalkylene group containing 2-15 carbon atoms, each R' alone is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aralkyl group, and R'-R' together represent an alkylene, cycloalkylene, or aralkylene group are prepared by esterifying a tetrahalophthalic anhydride with a mono- or dihydroxyalkane, -cycloalkane, or -aralkane having a boiling point below 250.degree. C. to form a half-ester and then reacting the half-ester with a stoichiometric amount of a diaminoalkane or diaminocycloalkane containing 2-15 carbon atoms. The (cyclo)alkylenediammonium compounds of the invention are useful as flame retardants for normally flammable organic polymers and also have utility as intermediates for the preparation of N,N'-(cyclo)alkylene-bis-tetrahalophthalimides, which are also useful as flame retardants. The imides are prepared simply by heating the diammonium compounds.
