  • Publication number: 20060182244
Abstract: A telecommunications system determines a telecommunications service provider's routing preference for routing a call for a subscriber. The telecommunications system includes a storage that stores call routing data and a call routing service application for determining the routing preference using the call routing data. The call routing data includes an indicator that indicates when the subscriber subscribes to resold local switching services and when the subscriber subscribes to unbundled local switching services. The telecommunications system also includes a processor that executes the call routing service application, and that generates call routing instructions for routing the call according to the determined routing preference.

  • Patent number: 7092390
Abstract: A system operable among compatible public networks, such as ATM networks, recognizes signals having external service addresses entering a controlled compatible public network. External service addresses are checked against a look-up of internal routing addresses that are generally only recognized and/or advertised within the controlled compatible public network, and that represent egress terminating interfaces. The external service address is replaced with the internal routing address, although the external service address is retained and transported. Routing to the egress terminating interface in the controlled compatible network is performed on the internal routing address only, without reference to the external service address. At the egress terminating interface, the internal routing address is discarded, and the external service address restored, as the signals are forwarded to the next entity, which is usually a connected compatible network or end system.

  • Patent number: 7088720
Abstract: Method and apparatus for a distributed switching system supporting a plurality of services. A service request is initiated by an initiating customer. The service request is then executed using, for example, a user-to-network interface setup. A terminating setup is then performed to either accept or reject the requested service. Multiple service requests are correlated with respective services to enable at least one appropriate policy and logic. Data related to the requested service is obtained using at least one of a push procedure, a pull procedure, a query procedure, and a procedure in which requests are associated with the issuance of certificates.

  • Patent number: 7076049
Abstract: A method is provided for designing an interface system. The method includes receiving a call from a customer at a call center, and logging a reason the customer is calling the call center. Subsequently, reasons from multiple customers are collected and categorized into task categories to be performed by the interface system. Menu options can then be designed based upon the task categories. The menu options include some of the language the customers used to express the reason for calling the call center. Performance of the interface system is evaluated by using cumulative response time (CRT), which is a total time a user interfaces with the system, and routing accuracy. The routing accuracy accounts for whether the user successfully navigated the interface system to a correct destination, whether the user navigated to an incorrect destination, and whether the user did not navigate to any destination.

  • Patent number: 7065193
Abstract: A telecommunications billing system generates a bill for a local service provider when a call is routed for a subscriber of the local service provider by an incumbent telecommunications service provider. The system includes a billing generator that generates a billing record in response to receiving the call. The billing generator generates a terminating access billing record when the call is an unbundled local switching call to the subscriber of the local service provider. Alternatively, the billing generator generates an originating access billing record when the call is an unbundled local switching call from the subscriber of the local service provider.

  • Patent number: 7065184
Abstract: A presence device operable in a first mode and a second mode is associated with a communication device. In the first mode, a user using the presence device is biometrically authenticated and a presence confirmation input is received from the communication device. In the second mode, a user-entered log-in input is received from the communication device. A central presence database is updated to indicate that the communication device is active for the user. A received message which is to be routed to the user is sent to the active device indicated by the central presence database.

  • Publication number: 20060114889
Abstract: A system that controls access to a communications network in accordance with a network service includes a service controller and a network connector. The service controller receives a request for the network service from an end system, provides the end system with a unique setup identifier and an enabling certificate, and instructs the end system to send a connection setup request to access the communications network, the connection setup request including the certificate and the unique setup identifier. The certificate includes information relating to a permitted setup and service policy or logic representing service capabilities or service permissions. The network connector receives the connection setup request from the end system, processes the connection setup request based on the certificate and the unique identifier, and establishes a network connection in accordance with at least the certificate.

  • Patent number: 7054432
Abstract: A communications system is provided for routing calls based on a location of a calling party. The communications system includes a processor that determines routing of a call placed by a calling party using one of a plurality of call origination devices. The call origination devices are operatively connected to a switching device that is operatively connected to the processor. The call is placed to a destination corresponding to a service having a service area. The switching device services calls placed from call origination devices located within the service area and calls placed from call origination devices located outside the service area. The processor determines whether the calling party is within the service area, and the processor instructs the switching device to route the call to the destination based upon the processor determining that the calling party is within the service area.

  • Patent number: 7054369
Abstract: A method comprises determining a plurality of time intervals Tp and Tn within a variable bit rate (VBR) representation of an image sequence. The time intervals Tp are those in which a number of blocks of information per unit time is greater than a baseline value. The time intervals Tn are those in which a number of blocks of information per unit time is less than the baseline value. A second representation of the image sequence is created in which some blocks of information Bp are removed from the time intervals Tp and interlaced with blocks of information Bn in the time intervals Tn to reduce a variation in a number of blocks of information per unit time between the time intervals Tp and Tn.

  • Patent number: 7054431
Abstract: A method and system for generating customer reports based on station message detail recording (SMDR) data includes a service control point (SCP) in a public switched telecommunications network (PSTN). The service control point samples calling data from multiple service switching points for calls originating from a private customer network, including centrex and PBX systems. The service control point interfaces with a front end processor and transmits the calling data. The front end processor formats the calling data into SMDR data, which is transmitted to a host central processing unit. The host generates reports regarding the SMDR calling data, the reports being accessible by a customer via a connection to a private customer network.

Abstract: A method of providing a caller with a directory assistance dialog. The dialog is configurable, at any level of the dialog, from an automated speech recognition (ASR) dialog to an operator-assisted (OP) dialog. The dialog is handed off to an operator if any level of the speech recognition dialog fails. Also, a configuration switch may be set to cause the dialog to be handed off to an operator even if a response at some level of the ASR dialog is successfully recognized.

  • Patent number: 7043243
Abstract: A system and method for improved mobile assisted handoff in a digital cellular communication system that gives the mobile station the ability to synchronize to candidate base station transmissions in order to read the transmitted digital voice color code (DVCC) of the candidate station. This process-is performed during the idle period between two designated time slots in a TDMA frame. The invention is an enhancement to the existing mobile assisted handoff procedures described in the existing IS-136 standard. The present invention improves on the IS-136 standard's use of received signal strength measurements in that it allows the mobile station to acquire and report information regarding the digital verification color code (DVCC) of the candidate base station channels. Since the DVCC uniquely identifies the cell site to which a channel belongs, it is used to distinguish the candidate base station channel from its co-channel interferers, allowing the network to make a more informed handoff decision.
