  • Patent number: 6694138
Abstract: A system and method for improved mobile assisted handoff in a digital cellular communication system that gives the mobile station the ability to synchronize to candidate base station transmissions in order to read the transmitted digital voice color code (DVCC) of the candidate station. This process is performed during the idle period between two designated time slots in a TDMA frame. The invention is an enhancement to the existing mobile assisted handoff procedures described in the existing IS-136 standard. The present invention improves on the IS-136 standard's use of received signal strength measurements in that it allows the mobile station to acquire and report information regarding the digital verification color code (DVCC) of the candidate base station channels. Since the DVCC uniquely identifies the cell site to which a channel belongs, it is used to distinguish the candidate base station channel from its co-channel interferers, allowing the network to make a more informed handoff decision.

  • Patent number: 6693897
Abstract: A Call Alerting and Control System is provided in a communication environment to allow an Internet user (“user”) approximately real-time monitoring of information about an incoming call from a calling party while maintaining a connection with the Internet. The monitored information can include the calling party's name and telephone number. The system could also allow the user to provide an answering machine-type message to the calling party and the user to listen to the calling party's response to the message while still connected to the Internet. The system can further allow the user to reroute, answer or otherwise treat the incoming call while, at the user's discretion, either maintaining or disconnecting a connection to the Internet.

  • Publication number: 20040018831
Abstract: A central host performs an automated method of updating multiple remote devices. In one embodiment, the host recognizes a predetermined download time and, in advance of the download time, transmits a calendar update to multiple remote devices. The calendar update includes the download time, and the remote devices may utilize the download time to set calendar reminders for entering an active state. Within a short time after reaching the download time, the host pushes download data to the remote devices by broadcasting the download data. In one aspect, the host may receive message acknowledgements from remote devices in response to a first calendar update, and the host may automatically transmit additional calendar updates to any remote devices that did not receive the first calendar update. Additional embodiments involve related methods and the terminal devices that receive the updates.

Abstract: A customer service call system that provides both manual (assisted by a service representative) and automated problem solving dialogs. A routing process determines which dialog is appropriate for incoming calls. The routing process determines a probability that the automated system will resolve the problem and also determines an expected hold time for the customer to reach the manual dialog. The routing process uses this information to determine how the call should be routed.

Abstract: A method and system for automating categorization of statements includes a categorization system having a plurality of rules to categorize the statements, a rule engine, and a category engine. The rule engine allows for the creation and storage of objective rules used to categorize the statements. The category engine automatically applies the rules to a list of statements in order to categorize the statements and automatically determines a category label for each statement. The category engine further creates an output file including each statement and the corresponding category label. The use of objective rules to categorize the statements allows for reliable and consistent categorization results and eliminates any subjectiveness in the categorization of the statements.

  • Publication number: 20040005045
Abstract: A system and method include implementing and accessing a subscriber's telecommunications services, using a graphical user interface (GUI) via the Internet, and an interactive voice response (IVR) system via the public switched telecommunications network (PSTN). The system and method enable a subscriber to review, schedule and modify call forwarding information stored and implemented by a service control point (SCP) through a common server from any dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) telephone and IVR system via the PSTN or any GUI and Web client via the Internet. The subscriber is able to build and edit call forwarding data, such as a scheduler and priority and rejection screening lists, by the GUI via the Internet for subsequent implementation.

  • Publication number: 20030235284
Abstract: A method and system include routing telephone calls from multiple private networks via public lines and trunks in a public switched telephone network (PSTN) to a host switch, at which the connections would begin to run parallel. The host switch routes the telephone calls via a private trunk group to a private facility, such as an electronic tandem network (ETN) node or an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch. If the private trunk group is full or unavailable, the host switch routes the telephone calls over alternate private or public trunk groups and selected carriers.

  • Publication number: 20030215073
Abstract: A telecommunications system determines a routing preference of a telecommunications service provider for a telephone call from a calling party to a called party. A switch in the telecommunications system includes a signal generator that generates a signal in response to receiving the telephone call. The signal includes a service variable and a telecommunications service provider identifier. The service variable indicates a subscription-type for a telephone number associated with the calling party or the called party. The signal is used to determine the routing preference at a service control point in the telecommunications system. The service control point receives the signal from the switch and determines the routing preference. The routing preference is forwarded to the switch. The switch receives the routing preference and routes the telephone call according to the routing preference.

  • Publication number: 20030202640
Abstract: A method and system for automated speech-enabled responses to caller requests for information prompts caller requests for information from a menu that lists options based upon the frequency of requests for information and for automated collection and updating of content based upon the feedback provided by customers. For instance, a task analyzer classifies information requested by caller opening statements with the classifications based on the task the caller intends to accomplish. For a menu that provides information on telephone services, classifications may include instructions on how to use a service, pre-purchase information, identification of the services that the caller subscribes to, the cost of services, post-purchase information and identification of the caller's long distance carrier.

  • Publication number: 20030204435
Abstract: A method of collecting customer intentions of customers who use automated service systems, such as web-based or interactive telephone-based service applications. Customers are surveyed when they use the application to collect their intention in visiting the system. The responses of these customers are collected and tabulated. The relative frequencies of customer intentions are analyzed and used to design an interface to the service application, so that future customers will be presented with menu-type selections that best reflect their needs.

  • Publication number: 20030202643
Abstract: A method and system for automating customer slamming and cramming complaints includes an automated reporting system having one or more receiving devices and a complaint module. Customers who want to report a slam or cram access the automated reporting system and report the complaint without having to speak with a customer service representative. The complaint module obtains the customer telephone number and retrieves customer account information using the customer telephone number. Using the customer account information, the complaint module extrapolates a type of complaint for the customer complaint and prompts the customer for information regarding the customer complaint and the type of the complaint. The customer provides customer responses to the prompts and the complaint module provides an indication to the customer regarding each customer response.

Abstract: A method and system for allowing users to control the operation of hyperlinks includes a graphical user interface that displays Internet and intranet hyperlinks from web sites. The graphical user interface includes a selectable button that accepts user settings. The user settings allow the users to determine the operation of the hyperlinks so that the hyperlinks either open in a new browser window or in an existing browser window when selected by the user. An interface engine generates the selectable button on the graphical user interface, examines the selectable button for any user settings, and controls the operation of the hyperlinks based upon the user settings.

  • Publication number: 20030187639
Abstract: A method and system for evaluating telephone services provided by speech recognition interfaces an evaluation engine with a voice recognition service over a telephone system to submit speech utterance samples to the voice recognition service, receive the response of the voice recognition service to the sample utterances, and determine error and recognition of the sample utterances by the voice recognition service by comparing actual voice recognition service responses to expected responses. The evaluation engine permits evaluation of a voice recognition service for plural glossaries in different contexts, such as through predetermined nodes of a voice recognition service menu having plural glossaries.
