Abstract: Speaker-specified hints are used to establish conditions for a speech recognition system to select a recognition result for a previously provided utterance from among various possible homophones. The hints may characterize the utterance by a linguistic property, such as an orthographic, morphological, or semantic property.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for scanning a document which utilizes scanning hardware and associated software to automate the entire scanning process. The software analyzes a host computer and automatically maps user interface buttons of a scanner with application programs installed on the host computer. The software also establishes appropriate pre-defined scan configurations for each application program mapped to the user-interface buttons. When one of the user-interface buttons is pressed, the scanning process is invoked to generate a scanned image of a document. The scanned image is automatically delivered to the application program mapped to the pressed button and is generated with an image type and resolution according to the pre-defined scan configuration established for the application program mapped to the pressed button.

Abstract: A graphical user interface allows a speech recognition system user to browse available grammars and their topics. A dialog box interface displays the currently active grammar, grammar searching mode, and a current input. A list of valid word phrases of at least one word also is generated and displayed. Using the interface, a user additionally may select an active grammar and a method of searching and displaying valid examples from the grammar based on the current input.

Abstract: A computer enrolls a user in a speech recognition system by obtaining data representing a user's speech, the speech including multiple user utterances and generally corresponding to an enrollment text, and analyzing acoustic content of data corresponding to a user utterance. The computer determines, based on the analysis, whether the user utterance matches a portion of the enrollment text. If so, the computer uses the acoustic content of the user utterance to update acoustic models corresponding to the portion of the enrollment text. The computer may determine that the user utterance matches a portion of the enrollment text even when the user has skipped or repeated words of the enrollment text.

Abstract: Recognition of a text string is improved by analyzing the text string with respect to information about expected patterns of the parts of speech of words in the text string and by modifying the text string based on the analysis. Analyzing may include comparing the combinations of parts of speech to parts of speech associated with the words in the text string and, if at least one of the combinations of parts of speech matches parts of speech associated with the words, indicating that a compound word should be formed from the words associated with the matched parts of speech.
Abstract: Method and an apparatuses for managing electronic documents on a digital processing system or computer. In one embodiment, a web page is accessed on the Internet at a first location. At least a portion of the web page is then displayed. An image file capturing the displayed visual representation of the web page is generated and stored on the computer at a second location. A thumbnail representation is generated from the displayed visual representation. The first location and the second location are then associated with the thumbnail. Textual information included in the displayed visual representation is preserved and added to a searchable database. Subsequent selection of the thumbnail representation allows one to access either the web page at the first location or access the image file stored at the second location. The image file may be viewed without having to access the electronic document at the first location. Annotations may be added to the stored image file in one embodiment.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for an information processing system are disclosed for improved manipulation of documents consisting of multiple pages. In one embodiment, a multi-page document is depicted by a representation of a stack of pages and a request area through which an operator may navigate within the stack. In another embodiment, a multi-page document is depicted by static icon representing the stack and a dynamic miniature replica of a current page within the stack. Additional functions are disclosed such as adding one or more pages to a document, removing a page from a stack, rotating a page within a stack, and adding annotations to a page.
