Methods of treatment using extracts of the plant Cimicifuga, alone or in combination with at least one antiestrogenic compound, which avoid or diminish unwanted side-effects and provide increased therapeutic benefit.

Abstract: The invention relates to the use of 1,2 -benzopyrone derivatives for the treatment of susceptible malignant tumors in human beings. The derivatives used according to the invention are suitable for both preventive and also therapeutic treatment and they display in particular growth-inhibiting effect vis-a -vis brain-tumor cells and cells from human renal, prostate, skin or lung carcinomas.

Abstract: Alkoxylated phenyl and coumarin derivatives useful in the treatment of viral infections are disclosed. The compounds are particularly useful in the treatment of picornaviruses, and more particularly in the treatment of rhinoviruses.

Abstract: Extraction of pharmaceutically active compositions from a mixture of numerous ingredients, in particular from comminuted plants, such as Tanacetum parthenium, succeeds with a high yield and a surprisingly improved stability of the active substances when the extraction is carried out with a gas, preferably CO.sub.2, in the supercritical state.

Abstract: A glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 38 kD, isolated from the grain of Avena sativa, exhibits surprising pharmacological properties, including immunomodulating activity. The glycoprotein can be used to treat viral and bacterial infections, and can also be used to counter susceptibility to infection arising from a genetic or temporary immunodeficiency. A process for isolating the glycoprotein from Avena sativa is disclosed.

Abstract: 4-(Hydroxydiphenylmethyl)-1-piperidylphenylalkane derivatives as antihistamines of the formula ##STR1## and pharmaceutically acceptable salts of such derivatives are disclosed in whichn is an integer between 0 and 2,R.sup.1 -R.sup.5 represent, independently of one another, hydrogen and at least one of them represents a linear or branched alkyl radical with 1-4 carbon atoms, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxy radical or a hydroxyl radical. A method of treatment of allergic response in mammals is also disclosed.

These derivatives are N-alkyl-4-piperidyl .alpha.,.alpha.-diphenyl-.alpha.-acyloxyacetates having the formula ##STR1## wherein R is H, CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5 or C.sub.3 H.sub.7 ; R' is H, NH.sub.2, phenyl, carboxyphenyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkyl, hydroxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkyl, methoxy, ethoxy, methoxymethyl, ethoxymethyl, amino(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkyl which can be substituted in the alkyl radical by one or more of a --NH.sub.2, --COOH or --SCH.sub.3 group, N-acetylamino(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkyl, or a group having the formula--CH.dbd.CH--COOR"or--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --COOR"where n is an integer from 0 to 8, and R" is H, CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, C.sub.3 H.sub.7, or a pharmacologically acceptable cation; or a salt thereof with a pharmaceutically acceptable acid.
