The adsorptive material is placed inside a container. A temperature-activated mechanism is used to open the container. The temperature-activated mechanism includes an element formed of a shape memory metal or plural layers with different coefficients of thermal expansion, such as a bi-metallic strip.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a hydraulically actuated valve adapted for use in downhole well applications that enables control of several hydraulic devices from a single control line. In one embodiment, the valve has a valve body defining an inlet and first and second outlets. A spring-biased piston is located within the valve body. A pressure responsive indexer engages the piston to move the piston between a first and second position. In its first position, the piston prevents fluid flow from the inlet to the first outlet. In its second position, the piston prevents fluid flow from the inlet to the second outlet.

    Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for determining flow velocity within a formation utilizing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques in which the shape of the resonance region is restricted so that sensitivity to radial flow or vertical flow is obtained (or both when more than one NMR tool is used). Flow velocity using these NMR tools is determined using decay amplitude, frequency displacement or stimulated echoes (where the spins are stored along the magnetic field instead of the transverse plane to exploit echo decays and frequency displacements) based on the application of adiabatic pulses. Based on the described NMR measurement of flow velocity, additional wellbore parameters may be obtained such as a direct measurement of permeability, an assessment of drilling damage to the wellbore, formation pressure, invasion rate of the mud filtrate or the migration of fine mud particles during sampling operations.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a wear resistant cutting insert for use in rolling cutter drill bits. The insert has a cylindrical shank that is readily fitted in an interfering manner into cylindrical sockets formed in the rolling cutter. The surface of die insert that engages the formation, however, is none-circular, and preferably, oval shaped. To prevent the insert from turning in the socket, a shallow counterbore is formed about the socket that accommodates the shape of the top, non-cylindrical portion of the insert. The depth of the recess is made slightly greater than the length of the shank of the insert so that the load applied to insert during operation is not transmitted through the shank to the bottom of the socket in the cutter.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided to reduce interference resulting from activation of explosive devices. One type of interference is charge-to-charge interference, and another type of interference is pre-shock interference between a detonating cord and an explosive, such as a shaped charge. To reduce interference, one or more shock impeding elements are placed proximal one or more explosives to impede propagation of shock caused by detonation of the explosives. The shock impeding elements include a porous material, such as a porous liquid or solid. In another arrangement, a shock barrier may be positioned between a detonating cord and an explosive to reduce pre-shock interference. In yet another feature, an encapsulant may be provided around one or more shaped charges to enhance structural support for the shaped charges.

    Abstract: A system for permitting deployment of a polished bore receptacle, seal stack and production tubing in a single downhole trip into a wellbore. The system includes a polished bore receptacle, production tubing, a seal stack disposed about the production tubing, and a one trip seal latch that couples the production tubing to the polished bore receptacle. The seal latch includes an outer latch housing and an inner latch housing. The outer housing and inner housing are connected by a releasable coupling device. Thus, the polished bore receptacle can be moved downhole for latching to a packer without insertion of the seal stack into the interior of the polished bore receptacle. Upon latching of the polished bore receptacle to the packer, the coupler may be selectively released to permit insertion of the seal stack into the polished bore receptacle.

    Abstract: A downhole string includes a liner and devices positioned outside the liner. One or more control lines extend from the liner devices along the exterior of the liner to one or more connectors that provide connection points inside the liner. The one or more connectors may include electrical connectors (e.g., direct contact connectors), inductive connectors (e.g., inductive couplers), optical connectors (e.g., fiber optic connectors), and hydraulic connectors. The one or more control lines may be electrical lines, fiber optic lines, or hydraulic lines. The downhole string may also be used with a cement protector during cementing operations to protect both the inside of the liner as well as the one or more connectors attached to the liner. The cement protector includes a sleeve that isolates cement from the inside of the liner during a cementing operation so that a liner wiper plug is not needed. The cement protector is engageable to a pulling tool that is attached to a running tool.

    Abstract: A downhole device and method for performing a function in a well. The device has a series of dedicated hydro-mechanical locks that prevent occurrence of an associated function. The hydro-mechanical locks are capable of being released directly by a respective elevated hydraulic activating pressure condition, and are constructed and arranged for sequential operation, such that a successive lock in the series cannot be released until after the hydraulic pressure condition required to release the preceding lock in the series has occurred. In a preferred embodiment, an actuator sequentially releases each lock in a series of locks, subsequently moving an operator to perform a function. A preferred implementation employs a series of resilient rings movable, sequentially, from a locking to an unlocking position, and a common actuator that effects these movements.

    Abstract: The invention is a downhole valve that includes a body, a flow tube assembly that includes an upper tube member and a lower tube member, and a flapper valve. The flapper valve is pivotally attached to the body and is positioned between the upper tube member and the lower tube member when the flapper valve is in a closed position that blocks fluid flow in an internal bore of the body. The flapper valve is moved from the closed position to an open position in response to an upward movement of the upper tube member and the lower tube member. When the flapper valve pivots to the open position, the lower tube member moves adjacent to and forms a seal with the upper tube member, forming an unobstructed internal bore.
