  • Patent number: 6620150
Abstract: An apparatus is guided by a guidewire within a luminal structure of a patient for receiving a radiation dose delivery wire with a radiation source attached to its distal end, for treating a disease process. The apparatus includes a balloon catheter with a blind lumen sealed at its distal end and a guidewire lumen extending therethrough to accept a guidewire. The blind lumen is adapted to accept the radiation delivery wire into its proximal end. In a method of treating the disease process with the apparatus, the guidewire is inserted into the guidewire lumen of the balloon catheter, the balloon catheter is inserted into the patient's luminal structure at least as far as a predetermined section of the luminal structure, the radiation dose delivery wire is inserted into the blind lumen in the balloon catheter and moved a predetermined distance therein for a predetermined period of time, and, after the period has elapsed, the radiation dose delivery wire is removed from the blind lumen.

  • Patent number: 6616629
Abstract: The balloon catheter comprises a catheter tube surrounded distally by an elongated inflatable balloon. Throughout the catheter tube is a longitudinal lumen for positioning a radioactive radiation emitter within the balloon. The catheter comprises a second lumen for directing inflation fluid into the balloon. Belt means creating a waist are mounted on the balloon to squeeze it down to nearly the diameter of the catheter thereby leaving a small passage for the inflation fluid. The belt means divide the balloon into sections to assure a close center fit of the catheter within the balloon.

Abstract: An interventional catheter for angioplasty and the like, comprising a catheter tube formed of two superposed layers of materials different from one another. The inner layer is comprised of a low friction nonkinkable material to avoid risk of clogging of a guide wire in the longitudinal lumen. The outer layer is comprised of a material with higher friction coefficient than the material forming the inner layer. The balloon is welded at its distal end to the outer layer of the catheter tube. The proximal end of the balloon is welded to a tube surrounding the catheter tube.
