Patent number: 6438935Abstract: A process and apparatus are provided for the manufacture of a composite fibrous strand comprising glass fibers. Glass fibers and an additive fibrous material (e.g., thermoplastic polymeric fibers) are each introduced separately into a substantially rotationally symmetric zone that is closed circumferentially except for a longitudinal introduction locale. The glass fibers and the fibers of the additive fibrous material are subjected to a vortex to form a homogeneous composite fibrous strand. Good admixture of the fibrous components is made possible thereby facilitating the ultimate production of composite articles wherein the glass fibers are disposed as reinforcement in a highly uniform manner. Such homogeneity and uniformity provides improved mechanical properties to the end user.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 2001Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Schuller GmbHInventors: Michaela Klaus, Reinhart Dosch, Hans Georg Mann

Patent number: 5194296Abstract: The process involves coating on both sides of an endless track of a base material consisting of inorganic fibers, preferably a glass fiber fleece, with aqueous ceramic slips, and drying of the coating. The base material with a weight per unit area of 30-200 g/m.sup.2 is coated with a slip, at least 500 g/m.sup.2, preferably 1000-2000 g/m.sup.2, without the use of an additional support, preferably on one side with a paste and on the other side with a glaze slip. The slips contain 3-20% by weight organic binders that decompose uniformly and without residue between 250.degree. and 600.degree. C. The dried, unfired veneers in free suspension may be coiled and uncoiled and subjected to continual decoration and firing processes.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1990Date of Patent: March 16, 1993Assignees: Degussa AG, Glaswerk Schuller GmbHInventors: Josef Hammer, Werner Voelker, Paul F. Patent number: 4824456Abstract: A process and apparatus for the production of glass fiber is disclosed. The process and apparatus are directed to collecting filaments being drawn from streams of liquid glass into a plurality of loosely bound strands of filaments which additionally are not treated with any binders. The strands are then drawn off individually on separated but parallel rotating surfaces to provide the filaments with a desired diameter.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1988Date of Patent: April 25, 1989Assignee: Glaswerk Schuller GmbHInventor: Fredo E. Patent number: 4252550Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for integrating a newly formed continuous filament into a continuous strand. Mechanically complicated prior integration devices are usually expensive to purchase and operate and do not always ensure that the initially formed section of the new filament is separated from the new filament, that the fiber diameter of the new filament is predrawn sufficiently for ready integration, or ensure the reliability of the guiding elements facilitating integration. The present invention includes the operations of drawing a plurality of continuous filaments 3 from a bushing 1 into a fiber fan 4 by gathering the filaments 3 into a continuous strand 6 at a deflection point or roller 5. Should one of the filaments 3 break, a new continuous filament 8 is formed which is deflected by a guide plate 9 toward the point 5.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1979Date of Patent: February 24, 1981Assignee: Glaswerk Schuller GmbHInventors: Fredo E. Patent number: 4235614Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for promoting the fiberization of continuous lengths of thermoplastic materials such as glass. Prior attempts to reduce fiber breakage, bushing flooding and facilitate fiberization utilized steam or a decomposable gas or gas mixture which was exposed to the heat radiating from the bushing in order to form a treatment medium. However, the prior art was plagued with poor gas distribution in the fiberization zone and thermal degradation of the structural elements constituting the treatment medium distribution system caused, in part, by the high radiant heat levels experienced proximate the bushing. The present method and apparatus comprises conducting a pressurized fluid and a vaporizable treatment liquid to a heat exchanger comprising a mixer tube located close to the bushing and a delivery tube. Radiant heat from the bushing causes the liquid to vaporize and mix with the pressurized fluid forming a treatment vapor.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1979Date of Patent: November 25, 1980Assignee: Glaswerk Schuller GmbHInventor: Fredo E. Patent number: 4155732Abstract: A spinnerette has an extrusion crucible provided with extrusion nozzles in its bottom wall, and a melting crucible atop the extrusion crucible. The melting crucible is bounded in longitudinal direction by walls having arcuately curved wall segments so that the interior of the melting crucible is composed of a plurality of generally cylindrical compartments which are arranged side by side in the longitudinal direction and which open into one another where they adjoin each other.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1978Date of Patent: May 22, 1979Assignee: Glaswerk Schuller GmbHInventors: Fredo Schlachter, Heinz Keib, Dieter Kahnke, Christian Beck

Patent number: 3945814Abstract: Glass tablets which are to be introduced seriatim into an elongated melting chamber of a crucible having orifices for extrusion of glass filaments are stored in a magazine and are fed onto the first section of a first vibrating trough whose sections have different inclinations. The last section of the first trough discharges tablets into the receptacle of a weighing device which accumulates a predetermined number of tablets and thereupon discharges the accumulated batch of tablets onto the first section of a second vibrating trough the last section of which discharges tablets into an elongated hopper registering with the open top of the melting chamber. At least the last section of the second trough is inclined downwardly toward the hopper to such an extent that tablets leaving the preceding section of the second trough are accelerated during travel in the last section and enter the hopper at timely spaced intervals.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1974Date of Patent: March 23, 1976Assignee: Glaswerk Schuller GmbHInventors: Heinz Keib, Dieter Kahnke
