Abstract: The present invention uses gene expression profiling, and gene silencing methods to identify and provide a plurality of ‘validated’ KSHV-induced cellular gene sequences and pathways useful as targets for modulation of KSHV-mediated effects on cellular proliferation and phenotype (e.g., cancer) associated with latent and lytic phases of the Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV; Human herpesvirus 8; HHV8) life cycle. Particular embodiments provide therapeutic compositions, and methods for modulation of KSHV infection or KSHV-mediated effects on cellular proliferation and phenotype, comprising inhibition of KSHV-induced gene sequences. Additional embodiments provide screening assays for compounds useful to modulate KSHV infection or KSHV-mediated effects on cellular proliferation and phenotype. Further embodiments provide diagnostic and/or prognostic assays for KSHV infection.

Abstract: Nucleotides and nucleotide analogs are used in various sequencing by incorporation/sequencing by synthesis methods. Nucleotide analogs comprising 3?-blocking groups are used to provide reversible chain-termination for sequencing by synthesis. Typical blocking groups include phosphate groups and carbamate groups. Fluorescent nucleotides are used to perform sequencing by synthesis with detection by incorporation of the fluorescently labeled nucleotide, optionally followed by photobleaching and intercalating dyes are used to detect addition of a non-labeled nucleotide in sequencing by synthesis with detection by intercalation. Microfluidic devices, including particle arrays, are used in the sequencing methods.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for locating an elongated object in a three dimensional data array are disclosed. A slice of data generally lengthways of the elongated object is selected. Points on the object in the selected slice are identified. Data including the points are transposed parallel to the slice and transversely to the elongated object to align the points in a direction parallel to the slice and transverse to the elongated object. A current slice is selected that is rotated around the length direction of the object relative to the previously selected slice. The identifying and transposing are repeated to align points on the object in a direction parallel to the current slice and transverse to the elongated object.

Abstract: A technique has been developed to fabricate micro- or nanopumps based on porous alumina thin films. The main body of the nanopump consists of a porous alumina thin film (containing nano-sized channels of about 40-300 nm in diameter) with conductive surfaces (e.g. Au coating layers) on both sides of the film. Through the fabrication of nanochannels in (the alumina films) and the subsequent annealing and surface activation processes, high-efficiency micro- or nanopumps can be made. The nanofluidic flow through the nanochannels of the alumina thin films is driven by an electric field with no moving parts. The flow rate (up to 50 millilitres/(min·cm2)) of water through the alumina thin film can be continuously tuned through the intensity of the electric field, i.e., the DC electric potential applied across the nanochannels.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating a panoramic image of part of a target, comprises providing a scanner having a source of penetrating radiation facing a detector having an array of sensors for the penetrating radiation. The target is positioned between the source of penetrating radiation and the detector, and scanned with relative rotation of the scanner and the target. Radiation received at a plurality of the sensors spaced apart in the circumferential direction of the relative rotation is separately recorded. A panoramic image is generated by combining for each pixel of the panoramic image outputs from different sensors at different times during the relative rotation, the combined outputs being selected to represent rays of radiation passing through a point on a defined curve. The generated panoramic image and a graphical representation of the defined curve are displayed. Instructions are received from a user to alter the defined curve.
