Patent number: 5823375Abstract: A cargo container has a frame (3) and a door (8,9) mounted on the frame. A support, preferably in the form of stacking plate (30), is mounted on the door so that when the door is closed and excessive loads applied externally to the container distort the container frame, the support (30) mounted on the door (8.9) engages the frame (3). The support and the door thereby together share the loading forces of the external load with the container frame. Conveniently, the support is spaced from an ISO lifting casting (26) constituting part of the frame (3) of a container, when there are no external loading forces applied to the container frame. Preferably, part of the support is provided by one (19) of two side members (19,20) of the door arranged to extend in a direction between upper and lower crossmembers of the container, in use.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1997Date of Patent: October 20, 1998Assignee: Sea Containers Ltd.Inventor: Stanley Nessfield

Patent number: 4998634Abstract: A door construction for a shipping container. (1) to ISO standard is provided in which there is a main frame (6) arranged to be pivotally mounted on the door frame on the container, locking means (8,9) mounted on the door (2,3) within the profile of the door so that the opposed ends of the locking means (8,9) extend beyond opposed edges of the main frame and seal means (13) extending around the edges of the main frame which are to be engaged with the container door frame for sealing the door (2,3) relative to the container (1), the seal (13) at least in the region of the locking means being offset inwardly of the locking means. The construction permits the door (2,3) and its locking members (8,9) to be within the wall profile yet maintain sealing round the door.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1990Date of Patent: March 12, 1991Assignee: Sea Containers LtdInventor: Stanley Nessfield

Patent number: 4162737Abstract: A collapsible container of the open-platform type for containing goods comprises a generally rectangular platform base having a stub corner post at each corner of the platform base. At its upper end, each corner post has means for coupling it to a bottom corner portion of a superimposed container. A corner post is pivotally connected to each stub corner post about an axis substantially parallel to the longer side of the base for movement from a folded-down position in which it lies below the level of the tops of the stub corner posts, through a vertical position into a position slightly beyond the vertical to enable bracing means to be swung upwards and coupled between the two corner posts at each of the two ends of the frame to hold them in their vertical positions.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1978Date of Patent: July 31, 1979Assignee: Sea Containers, Ltd.Inventor: Martin Clive-Smith

Patent number: 4099640Abstract: A collapsible goods-shipping container of the type used for loading on ships, trailer, trucks or railroad cars has a base, side walls hinged at their lower edges to sides of the base for folding inwards one over the other onto the base, end walls incorporating corner posts by which they are pivoted to stub corner posts of the base for folding over the side walls in the collapsed condition and a roof or lid somewhat shorter than the overall length of the container and adapted to rest on the upper edges of the side and end walls, the roof being somewhat shorter than the base to enable the roof to be stowed under the folded end walls, the remainder of the roof being formed by top portions of the end walls. Sealing means are provided on the various components so as to exclude water when the container is in its erected condition.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1976Date of Patent: July 11, 1978Assignee: Sea Containers, Ltd.Inventors: Stanley Nessfield, John Elliott Foster, Martin Clive-Smith
