Abstract: The disclosure is related to systems and methods of concurrent actions for data storage. A controller may be configured to initialize a first data storage medium and a second data storage medium. The controller may receive a command when the first data storage medium is initialized but before the second data storage medium is initialized. The controller may service the command when the command utilizes the first data storage medium and the initialization for the second data storage medium is not complete. A controller may also be configured to send an indicator to a host that the system is ready to receive commands when a first data storage device is initialized, but a second data storage device is still in an initialization process.

Abstract: Producing a servo pattern on a media involves rotating a master, and during a first revolution of the master, forming a first transition at a first radial position on the master, and forming a first transition at a second radial position. During a second revolution of the master, a second transition at the first radial position is formed, and a second transition at the second radial position is formed. By exposing individual servo burst transitions located at the first and second radial positions, in separate disk revolutions, only one of the magnetic transitions will inherit a particular deflection from a nominal radial position. If there are any mechanical disturbances, each magnetic transition will be randomly displaced from its nominal position, reducing the written-in run-out by ?n, where n is the number of magnetic transitions in a particular servo burst.

Abstract: A data structure is formed that references a garbage collection metric for each of a plurality of associated garbage collection units of a flash memory device. Each garbage collection metric is based on one or more device state characteristics of the associated garbage collection unit. In response to a threshold change in the one or more device state variables, a region of interest within the data structure is sorted based on the garbage collection metrics. One or more garbage collection units are selected for garbage collection operations from the sorted region of interest.
Abstract: A magnetic recording head comprises a write pole tip adjacent to an air bearing surface and a return pole. In addition, a near field transducer is positioned adjacent the write pole in order to produce near field radiation to heat a portion of a recording medium to facilitate switching by the magnetic write pole. The near field transducer is a reverse optical near field transducer with internal bevel structures that enhance the magnetic write field intensity.
Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording medium is provided. The perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes: a perpendicular magnetic recording layer formed on a substrate; and at least one soft magnetic under-layer formed between the substrate and the perpendicular magnetic recording layer, wherein the soft magnetic under-layer is made from an alloy of a non-magnetic material and a magnetic material which exists in the form of granular nanoparticles in matrix of the non-magnetic material, and at least two of the magnetic nanoparticles are spaced apart from one another by a predetermined distance so as to mutually make an anti-ferromagnetic coupling.

Abstract: An apparatus may comprise a memory including a first area of total usable storage capacity of the memory reported to a host device, a second area occupied by error correction code (ECC) appended to data stored in the first area, and a third area of usable data storage capacity not reported to the host device. The apparatus may further comprise a controller configured to balance sizes of the second area and third area to maintain a size of the first area as the length of ECC of data stored in the first area increases. The controller may be further configured to exchange data having an ECC of a controllable length with the memory based on a data storage location, and adjust the controllable length of the ECC based on an error history of the data storage location.
