Abstract: A disposable cartridge assembly for a surgical stapling instrument wherein an anvil carrying component comprises constituent anvil elements articulated with respect to each other and presenting an annular anvil surface. A biasing element is provided for biassing the elements into a retracted position wherein the anvil surface has a first diameter. A locking element is provided for releasable interengagement with the anvil elements so as to maintain them in an expanded position against the biassing force wherein the anvil surface has a second larger diameter and so as to lock said elements against relative displacement, the arrangement being such that upon disengagement of the locking element from the anvil elements, the latter are displaced under the biassing force into the retracted position.
