  • Patent number: 8804842
Abstract: A method for decoding a compressed image stream, the image stream having a plurality of frames, each frame consisting of a merged image including pixels from a left image and pixels from a right image. The method involves the steps of receiving each merged image; changing a clock domain from the original input signal to an internal domain; for each merged image, placing at least two adjacent pixels into an input buffer and interpolating an intermediate pixel, for forming a reconstructed left frame and a reconstructed right frame according to provenance of the adjacent pixels; and reconstructing a stereoscopic image stream from the left and right image frames. The invention also teaches a system for decoding a compressed image stream.

  • Patent number: 8384766
Abstract: A system is provided for processing a compressed image stream of a stereoscopic image stream, the compressed image stream having a plurality of frames in a first format, each frame consisting of a merged image comprising pixels sampled from a left image and pixels sampled from a right image. A receiver receives the compressed image stream and a decompressing module in communication with the receiver decompresses the compressed image stream. The left and right images of the decompressed image stream are stored in a frame buffer. A serializing unit reads pixels of the frames stored in the frame buffer and outputs a pixel stream comprising pixels of a left frame and pixels of a right frame. A stereoscopic image processor receives the pixel stream, buffers the pixels, performs interpolation in order to reconstruct pixels of the left and right images and outputs a reconstructed left pixel stream and a reconstructed right pixel stream, the reconstructed streams having a format different from the first format.

Abstract: Method and system for optimizing resource usage in a graphics pipeline. The graphics pipeline renders pixels of a two-dimensional image on a basis of at least one model and outputs a stream of image frames characterized by a frame rate, a resolution and a level of detail. If the format in which the frames will be output from the graphics pipeline is characterized by pixel omission, the plurality of pixels removed from the frames prior to their output from the graphics pipeline according to the format are identified, and the graphics pipeline is configured to only render pixels other than the plurality of pixels that will be removed. Accordingly, it may be possible to reassign resources of the graphics pipeline from pixel rendering-related operations to other processing operations, thus optimizing resource usage and allowing for an improved performance by the graphics pipeline.

  • Patent number: 8254467
Abstract: A method and system for scaling frames of a compressed image stream, each frame including a mosaic of pixels. For each frame of the encoded image stream, the even-numbered lines of the frame are scaled as a first grouping of lines, while the odd-numbered lines of the frame are scaled as a second grouping of lines. This grouping of the lines of the frame may occur within the frame itself or by dividing the frame into sub-frames, in which case the even-numbered lines of the frame are scaled independently from the odd-numbered lines of the frame and a scaled version of the frame is then generated by merging the scaled even-numbered lines of the frame with the scaled odd-numbered lines of the frame.

Abstract: Methods and an apparatus for interpolating a digital image frame located between a first anchor frame and a second target frame are described. The apparatus comprises a motion vector estimator unit for estimating a block-based motion vector and a corresponding variable-size sub-block motion vector based on, and between, the first anchor frame and the second target frame; and a motion compensation interpolation unit for interpolating the digital image frame from the corresponding variable-size sub-block motion vector.

  • Publication number: 20110164110
Abstract: Detection compressed stereoscopic frames in a digital video stream. A stereoscopy detector is capable of detecting whether an image stream is stereoscopic or not, where the image stream may be monoscopic, stereoscopic and, in the latter case, encoded in one of many different possible stereoscopic encoding formats. The stereoscopy detector may also detect a particular encoding format for a stereoscopic image stream. The stereoscopy detector may also detect if quincunx encoding was used. Stereoscopy may be detected based on an observation of two portions in a frame sequence, and based on a comparison of segments in each portion. A change between stereoscopy and monoscopy, or between stereoscopic formats, may be detected as well, and may be detected based on multiple tests in time in a deliberate hysteresis.

  • Publication number: 20110069225
Abstract: A method of transmitting a digital video stream having a plurality of image frames and being characterized by a vertical resolution and a frame rate. A temporal multiplexing operation is applied to the image frames of the video stream in order to generate a compressed video stream having the same vertical resolution and half the frame rate of the video stream. This compressed video stream is then transmitted in lieu of the original video stream. At the receiving end, temporal de-multiplexing and pixel interpolation operations are applied to the frames of the compressed video stream in order to reconstruct the original video stream.

  • Publication number: 20100135379
Abstract: A method and a system for encoding and decoding a digital image frame. Metadata representative of a value of at least one component of at least one pixel of the frame is generated in the course of applying an encoding operation to the frame. A standard compression operation is then applied to the encoded frame, as well as to the metadata, in preparation for either transmission or recording. At the receiving end, both the encoded frame and its associated metadata undergo standard decompression, after which the metadata is used in the course of applying a decoding operation to the encoded frame for reconstructing the original frame.
