  • Patent number: 5418989
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved innerspring unit for a mattress using a plurality of formed wire elements for support. Enhanced lateral and longitudinal stability of the improved innerspring is provided by one or more stabilizing features including dual formed wire elements, complimentary recesses to secure the intersection of longitudinal and lateral wires and formed wire elements disposed on the edges of the unit which are formed of the same wires which extend longitudinally and laterally across the unit. A variety of different formed wire elements is disclosed, each of which provide different support characteristics. By varying the type, number and location of the different formed wire elements, a particular support profile may be provided which may correspond, for example, to the weight contour of a prone human body.

  • Patent number: 5317768
Abstract: A mattress having a top surface component and a spring component. The top surface component comprises multiple layers. The first layer is the cover material for enveloping the entire mattress. The second layer is a fiber material covering the entire top surface of the mattress. The third layer is convoluted foam subtending the fiber layer and having a plurality of peaks for supporting the fiber layer in a no load condition. The fourth layer is a backing material for the convoluted foam layer. The peaks of the convoluted foam layer compress either completely or partially when a weight is applied and return to their original no load position when the weight is removed. The compression and return action of the peaks of the convoluted foam layer exercise the fiber layer preventing the matting thereof and cause the movement of air to keep the fiber layer dry.

  • Patent number: 4139919
Abstract: An internal support structure for a mattress which has a plurality of springs oriented in matrix fashion into a plurality of rows and columns, at least one outer border wire extending around the periphery of the matrix and secured to the springs located at the border or terminal rows and columns of the matrix, layers of padding or cushioning material and a fabric cover. The internal support unit comprises an inner border wire structure which is connected to the outer border wire of the mattress and to at least some of said springs. The inner border wire includes four separate wire band sections which overlap one another in a grid pattern and form a closed inner border loop. The ends of each band section are connected to the outer border wire. The inner border wire and outer border wire are concentric and located in the same horizontal plane.

  • Patent number: 3945627
Abstract: A resilient foundation assembly for furniture expecially a box spring for supporting a mattress. A frame means which defines a generally planar foundation area, a grid means overlaying and spaced in a plane above and generally parallel to the foundation area plane and a plurality of spring units resiliently connected between the frame means and grid means. The spring units are formed of a single length of wire and comprise two end segments and a plurality of dual counter reaction modular coil springs contiguous therebetween. Each dual counter reaction spring comprises two leg sections extending downwardly from the grid plane toward the planar foundation area formed by the frame means, the two leg sections are joined by a bridging segment of wire lying in the grid plane. Each leg section is formed by linear segments of wire positioned in predetermined angular relationships and joined by a coil section of wire.
