  • Patent number: 5952239
Abstract: There is provided a method and system for transferring biological material samples from the point of collection to a chamber for placement into a centrifuge for processing and analysis. A container is used to hold the sample from the point of collection and during transport to a sample chamber which is placed into the centrifuge. The container is provided with a threaded open end, the threads being complementary with screw threads on a lid and also with threads around a port in the chamber. Thus, the user collects the sample, places it within the container, and engages the lid to close the open end of the container. The container is transported to the laboratory, where the lid is removed, and the threads on the container engaged with the threads on the chamber to attach the container to the chamber. The container is then inverted to permit the sample to pass from the container into the chamber. The chamber may then be placed into a known centrifuge for processing.

  • Patent number: 5942129
Abstract: There is provided an apparatus and method for using a centrifuge to apply a treatment liquid, such as a fixative agent, to a specimen undergoing centrifugation analysis. There is provided a centrifuge sample chamber with a mounting flange for engagement with a microscope slide, so that specimen material is centrifuged to the slide for inspection. The sample chamber has an upper cavity and a lower specimen holding portion which are connected by a fluid passage. The specimen holding portion ideally includes a lower cavity with a lower leg extending down therefrom for holding the specimen prior to centrifugation. An upper hollow leg in communication with the upper cavity holds the treatment liquid while the chamber is at rest prior to centrifugation. Activation of the centrifuge tilts the chamber to incline the upper and lower legs, so that the treatment liquid flows into, and is held within, the upper cavity by centrifugal force.

  • Patent number: 5924580
Abstract: A rotational cadaver system is disclosed which incorporates a rotational storage rack. The rotational storage rack includes a first and second shaft and two wheels mounted thereto. The shaft is rotationally mounted on a plurality of legs. A number of branches are radially secured to each wheel and arms are pivotally secured to each branch. The arms include means for receiving a tray upon which a cadaver may be placed. The trays includes means for engagement with mechanical placement and retrieval means. The tray also include means for securing them to various types of autopsy tables. A motor is also provided for turning the shaft varying the position of the cadavers. A method is also disclosed for utilizing the system in conjunction with the performance of an autopsy.

  • Patent number: 5589400
Abstract: The method of distributing biological material suspended in a liquid sample comprises the steps of directing the liquid sample into a centrifuge sample chamber along a tortuous path of vertically spaced surfaces in the chamber, each of the surfaces being in communication with a discharge opening from the chamber to one surface of the microscope slide, continuing to direct the sample into the chamber until some of the biological material is deposited on portions of at least one of the surfaces and centrifuging the sample chamber whereby the biological material on each of the surfaces of the chamber passes through the discharge opening on the one surface of the slide.

  • Patent number: 5470758
Abstract: A cytology chamber comprises a sample holding portion, a funnel through which the fluid sample is directed into the holding portion of the chamber, a generally flat, solid flange member defining an upright support surface and having an opening through the flange member in communication with the holding portion, and baffle plates in the holding portion define a tortuous path of flow for collecting at least some of the sediment in the fluid prior to reaching the bottom of the holding portion.

  • Patent number: 5416029
Abstract: A system for identifying and tracking samples of biological material during the preparation of that tissue for microscopic evaluation. The system includes a plurality of colored aqueous embedding media, microscope slides marked to correspond to the colored embedding media, and, optionally, color-coded containers for the embedding media. A process for preparing samples of biological material using the identification system is also provided, as well as compositions for several embedding media including one or more coloring agents.
