Abstract: A number of embodiments of lubricating systems for small watercraft that might become inverted and wherein a lubricant reservoir supplies lubricant under gravity to a lubricant pump when the water pump is operating in a normal upright condition. An air return line extends from the lubricant pump back to the reservoir to pump air which may enter the lubricant pump back to the reservoir. Arrangements are provided for insuring that air cannot flow from the lubricant reservoir to the lubricant pump through the supply line when the watercraft is inverted and also for precluding lubricant pressure in the air return line from acting to force air back to the lubricant pump when the watercraft is inverted.
Abstract: An outboard motor having an improved catalyst system for treating the exhaust gases regardless of whether they are delivered to the atmosphere through an above the water exhaust gas discharge or a below the water exhaust gas discharge. When the engine is operating at high speeds, the exhaust gases only have surface contact with the catalyzer bed and do not flow through it while under slow speeds the exhaust gases flow through the catalyzer bed.
Abstract: A number of embodiments of outboard motors incorporating lubricating systems having a filter for filtering gravity flow of lubricant to the engine and for sensing a clogged filter condition. In each embodiment, a warning is given when the filter clogging condition is noted and furthermore there is provided an arrangement for reducing the speed of the engine and accordingly the lubricant consumption in response to such a clogging condition. In addition, the sensing device also provides an indication of the level of lubricant within the reservoir.

Abstract: Several embodiments of outboard drive units of inboard-outboard drives that employ a friction clutch separate from the forward, reverse transmission. In each embodiment, the friction clutch is contained within the outer housing of the outboard drive and is hydraulically actuated by a pump, motor arrangement that is also contained within the outer housing of the outboard drive unit.
Abstract: A combined cooling and heating system for an internal combustion engine. The system includes a cooling jacket that cools the cylinder block and which discharges through a thermostatically controlled valve into a coolant sump having upper and lower outlets. The lower outlet discharges into a heating jacket for the induction system so as to provide induction system heating that is relatively independent of the engine speed. The upper sump outlet discharges into the cylinder head cooling jacket.
