The polymers are prepared by alkylation or acylation of an engineering thermoplastic which contains one or more aromatic groups capable of being alkylated or acylated with a suitable arylcyclobutene alkylating or acylating agent. The prepared reactive engineering thermoplastics containing pendant arylcyclobutene groups may be cross-linked and cured by heating above about 200.degree. C.

Abstract: A coal or similar carbonaceous fuel is selectively freed of sodium by water washing it and ion exchanging the washed coal with a strong aqueous electrolyte solution which is substantially free of sodium ions and contains a kind and concentration of ions which are correlated with the composition of the coal to cause a selective removal of ion-exchangeable sodium from the coal, with at least a significant proportion of the ion-exchanging being conducted within a pipeline.
Abstract: Coal can be freed of ion-exchangeable sodium by contacting it with aqueous solutions of CO.sub.2 or formic or acetic acids at a mine mouth or contacting it with aqueous CO.sub.2 while transporting it in a pipeline.
Abstract: A process for removal of solid sulfur from specified solubilized iron chelate-containing solutions is described, the process being characterized by melting of the sulfur and maintenance of the solution during the melting and separation operations in the substantial absence of oxygen.

Abstract: The invention relates to a filter screen for the air outlet of an apparatus used to produce solid sulphur particles from a stream of molten sulphur supplied to the apparatus. According to the invention the filter screen comprises a plurality of closely spaced resiliently deformable filter elements arranged across the air outlet. The advantage of this arrangement is that sulphur particles collected on the resiliently deformable filter elements can be easily removed by causing the filter elements to vibrate. The filter elements may take the form of coil springs arranged adjacent one another about the air outlet. Also disclosed is a method for producing sulphur particles in which sulphur coating a filter screen is periodically dislodged by vibrating resilient deformable filter elements.
Abstract: A process for the production of epichlorohydrin is disclosed which comprises reacting allyl chloride, chlorine and water to form an intermediate, then rapid conversion and separation of epichlorohydrin product; the epichlorohydrin-depleted reaction mixture is cooled and subjected to electrodialysis then reverse osmosis to concentrate and remove deleterious by-products, and at least a substantial portion of the resultant permeate is recycled to the reaction zone, thereby enabling reduced operating costs and/or improved yield.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for reducing the force required to move a pipe through a J-tube attached to an offshore platform. The J-tube is provided with at least two spaced-apart sections and at least the pipe and/or one section is oscillated as the pipe is moved through the J-tube, thereby reducing the force required to move the pipe.
Abstract: A method for testing fiberglass sucker rods wherein the rod is pulled to a predetermined stress level while measuring the load, elongation and acoustic emissions. The load versus displacement is plotted in real time while the measured values are used to calculate the modulus of elasticity for various load ranges. From the measurements and calculated modulus of elasticity the quality of the rod can be determined.
Abstract: This invention relates to ethylene oxide catalysts comprising silver, alkali metal promoters supported on a carrier, which carrier is prepared by a process which comprises mixing an aluminum compound with a tin compound and calcining resultant mixture at a temperature greater than about 1100.degree. C.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for constructing a deep essentially horizontal borehole in the earth, as for the installation of a pipeline in Arctic offshore waters. This directional drilling technique eliminates exposure of an Arctic offshore pipeline to ice gouging and minimizes the hazards associated with unstable permafrost. Means are provided for gripping inside a borehole in order to apply thrust to a drill bit utilized to drill the borehole which is to contain the pipeline.

Abstract: This invention provides a process for the preparation of water-soluble vinyl saccharide polymers by polymerization of at least one water-soluble monovinyl saccharide monomer in water at a temperature in the range of from 10.degree. C. to 90.degree. C., characterized in that the polymerization is carried out in the presence of an azo-type free-radical initiator and that the process is limited to the polymerization of water-soluble monovinyl saccharide monomer in an amount not higher than 150 kilograms of monomer per cubic meter of water solution. The polymers prepared according to the invention may advantageously be used as thickeners for aqueous solutions in enhanced oil recovery and for water treatment.
