    Abstract: An improved electronic thermometer for rectal, oral, and axillary temperature measurements includes a removable module that houses a temperature sensitive probe and isolation chamber as well as a supply of clean, uncontaminated disposable probe covers on a single color coded module. Each removable module is interchangeably operable with a single temperature calculating unit. This thermometer design reduces the risk of patient exposure to all of the common sources of contamination encountered in the use of electronic thermometers by isolating the probe, the isolation chamber, and a supply of disposable probe covers on one dedicated removable module.

    Abstract: A sampling port having a mechanical valve for a drainage apparatus is disclosed which permits a practitioner to directly access a collection chamber of the drainage apparatus using a needle-less syringe for withdrawing a sample of fluid therefrom. The sampling port comprises a port in direct communication with the collection chamber and a mechanical valve partially disposed inside the port. The mechanical valve comprises a generally tubular body containing a spring loaded valve that is normally closed to fluid flow communication and operable using a needle-less tip syringe to actuate the valve. In operation, a practitioner engages the needle-less tip syringe to the valve which places the valve in an open position and permits fluid flow into the syringe as the practitioner draws back on the plunger of the syringe.

    Abstract: A disposable, molded probe cover for use with an electronic thermometer is disclosed. The probe cover comprises an elongated hollow body made of a plastic material which defines a distal end and a proximal end. The distal end of the body has a convex-shaped surface that defines a lubrication well adapted to hold a lubricant therein, while the proximal end forms an opening. The opening communicates with a chamber that extends the entire length of the body and is sized and shaped to receive a probe of the electronic thermometer. To vent air trapped in the chamber during insertion of the probe into the probe cover, the chamber is provided with an axial ridge defined along a portion of the chamber for allowing air trapped at the distal end of the chamber to escape the probe cover through the electronic thermometer. A plurality of detents are also provided along the chamber proximate the opening for securely engaging the probe and establishing a fluid tight seal between the probe cover and the thermometer.

The undulating groove is dimensioned to facilitate bending of the guidable region in at least one radial direction of movement relative to a longitudinal axis of the thermal probe. Preferably, the guidable region includes a plurality of undulating grooves, whereby adjacent undulating grooves are longitudinally spaced with respect to each other. The undulating grooves each define a sinusoidal configuration which may be arranged about an undulating axis extending in oblique relation to the longitudinal axis. The guidable region also includes a longitudinally extending backbone which resists bending of the guidable region in a radial direction of movement.

The housing may define a slot in an outer surface thereof that is configured to receive a portion of the slide for guiding movement. The cannula tab can include a boss disposed adjacent a distal portion of the slide having the double needle mounted thereto. The cannula tab may include a segment member having a button mounted thereto which is disposed within at least a portion of the slot and slideably engages the slot to facilitate movement of the slide. The plurality of segments can include an end portion extending from a proximal end thereof.

    Abstract: A endoscopic bipolar forceps for clamping and sealing tissue includes first and second jaw members pivotally attached in opposing relation relative to one another which are movable from a first open position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second clamping position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. A drive rod assembly connects each of the jaw members to a source of electrical energy such that the jaw members are capable of conducting bipolar energy through the tissue held therebetween. A handle attached to the drive rod assembly imparts movement of the first and second jaw members from the first and second positions. At least one stop member is attached to the jaw members for controlling the distance between the jaw members. The forceps may also include a yoke member for insulating the jaw members from one another to prevent short circuiting of the forceps.

    Abstract: A progressive filtration system for a chest drainage unit during continuous autrotransfusion comprising a gross filter for filtering incoming blood at the inlet portion of a collection chamber of a chest drainage unit and a conventional fine micron filter assembly located at the bottom portion of the collection chamber for refiltering collected blood prior to reinfusion of that blood back to the patient. The micron filter assembly includes a valve cap at the top portion of the assembly that functions as a plug to seal the top portion of the assembly and as a one way valve that permits reflux of later developing blood clots that might clog the tubing once the blood has already passed through the assembly. The valve cap is also adapted for sealing engagement with a drop tube that places the filter assembly in fluid flow communication with an outlet of the collection chamber located at the top portion of the chamber.

    Abstract: A multiplicity of high frequency electrodes in a cluster configuration may be inserted into tissue of a patient's body for producing heat ablation of abnormal tissue such as a tumor. The electrodes are connected coherently to the voltage output of a high frequency generator. An enlarged ablation volume is accomplished by the electrode cluster with reduced risk of hemorrhage because of the smaller diameter of the individual electrodes of the cluster. The electrodes terminate in conductive tips, which are cooled by a fluid coolant to further facilitate enlarged ablation volumes. Very large ablation volumes are accomplished by this process and apparatus. Various cluster electrode configurations may be adapted to meet specific clinical requirements.
