  • Patent number: 6488603
Abstract: A freewheel is provided for mounting a plurality of sprockets on an axle of a bicycle. The freewheel basically includes an inner tubular body, an outer tubular body coaxially mounted on the inner tubular body with a bearing assembly rotatably coupling the inner tubular body to the outer tubular body. A one-way clutch is coupled between the inner tubular body and the outer tubular body to allow one-way rotation between the inner and outer tubular bodies. In the preferred embodiment, seven sprockets are mounted on the exterior of the outer tubular body. The bearing assembly has a pair of ball bearing races of the same diameter located at one end. An outer ball housing and a side plate are utilized in conjunction with the inner tubular body to fixedly secure the first and second ball bearings on the exterior surface of the inner tubular body. The inner tubular body with the bearings is then fixedly coupled to the outer tubular body so that the outer tubular body can rotate relative to the inner tubular body.

  • Patent number: 6405613
Abstract: A cable saver mechanism is provided in a cable of a cable operated component, such as a rear derailleur, to protect the cable operated component or a part of the bicycle when the bicycle falls over and the cable operated component, e.g., the rear derailleur, hits the ground. The cable saver mechanism has a first housing portion, a second housing portion and a biasing member disposed between the first and second housing portions to urge them apart from each other. The first housing portion has a first tubular section with a first end wall and first open end spaced from the first end wall. The first end wall includes a first cable bore with an internal section becoming wider towards the first open end. The second housing portion has a second tubular section with a second end wall and second open end spaced from the second end wall. The second end wall includes a second cable bore. The first and second open ends of the first and second housing portions are movably coupled together.

  • Patent number: 6234926
Abstract: A tool is provided for holding a cable fixing bolt of a bicycle component in a loose condition. This tool allows the cable fixing bolt to be shipped and stored in loose condition, while preventing the cable fixing bolt from falling out of a bicycle component. The tool can be used with the cable fixing bolt derailleurs or brake device. The tool basically has three portions. The first portion engages a head portion of the cable fixing bolt. The second portion is spaced from the first portion and is located adjacent a threaded shaft portion of the cable fixing bolt. The third portion is spaced from the second portion and engages a part of the bicycle component (e.g., a nut, a link or a brake arm). In each embodiment, the first, second and third portions are arranged relative one another to hold the cable fixing bolt in a loose condition, while preventing the cable fixing bolt from being disengaged from the part of the bicycle component.

  • Patent number: 6234927
Abstract: A front derailleur for a bicycle is provided to move or shift a chain between two or more sprockets for changing gears. The front derailleur can be connected to the shift cable such that the shift cable is pulled upwardly or downwardly relative to the bicycle frame. The front derailleur has a fixed member adapted to be coupled to a portion of the bicycle, a chain guide for shiffing the chain of the bicycle and a linkage assembly coupled between the fixed member and the chain guide. The chain guide is located above the fixed member and a coil spring is used to bias the chain guide from an extended position to a retracted position. A detachable guide member is removably coupled to the linkage assembly for guiding the shift cable downwardly relative to the bicycle frame. If the detachable guide member is removed, then the shift cable is pulled upwardly relative to the bicycle frame.

  • Patent number: 6098908
Abstract: A fishing reel is constructed with a drag mechanism disposed between a first end of a spool shaft and a spool limiting relative rotation between the spool and the spool shaft. A rotor disposed around the spool is rotated in response to rotation of a handle on the housing for reeling in a fishing line. The handle is connected to a face gear disposed within the housing. A pinion gear contacts the face gear transmitting torque there from to a rotor shaft and then to the rotor. A sub-drag mechanism is mounted within a housing proximate a second end of the spool shaft which selectively limits relative rotation between the spool shaft and the housing. A sub-drag mechanism actuation mechanism is disposed on the same side of the face gear as the pinion gear for locking and unlocking the spool shaft against rotation within the housing, thus enabling and dis-enabling the sub-drag mechanism.
