    Abstract: The present invention provides methods of treating inflammatory bowel disease comprising administering to a subject in which remission has not been achieved after a first treatment of about 4-8 weeks of 5-ASA (mesalamine or 5-ASA), a further daily dose greater than about 4 g of 5-ASA in controlled release form to achieve a favorable response to treatment.
