  • Patent number: 5955352
Abstract: An instrument for chemical and microbiological tests comprises a sample container for temporarily storing a liquid sample; a plurality of sample-holding portions formed on the bottom face of the sample container; and a liquid-absorbent body capable of coming in contact with the liquid sample so that the body can absorb the excess sample, when the liquid sample is introduced into the container, while retaining the sample to be held on the sample-holding portions. This instrument can be used in a chemical or microbiological test wherein a sample is used in a relatively small amount and, in particular, those requiring a large number of reactions and cultivation. Moreover, the instrument does not require the dispensation of a sample to each reaction system and does not cause any scatter of the sample in the surroundings.

  • Patent number: 5556640
Abstract: There is provided a dry gel composition comprising 40% by weight or below of a medicine which can be orally administered, 3% by weight or above of a gelling agent and 5% by weight or below of a binder, which composition is capable of forming a gruel-like aqueous gel composition upon mixing with 2 to 15 parts weight of water per part by weight of the composition at a temperature of 40.degree. C. or below. The gelling agent usable herein is, for example, pregelatinized starch having a concentration of 50% by weight or above. The medicine which can be orally administered is, for example, cinnarizine. Upon mixing with a predetermined quantity of water, the dry gel composition forms a homogeneous aqueous gel composition having a viscosity of about 100 to 500 cp, which is preferably thixotropic. Even aged people having a weak swallowing function can easily swallow the aqueous gel composition, without causing improper sucking into their tracheas.

  • Patent number: 5350680
Abstract: A cephalosporinase testing agent comprising a cephalosporin antibiotic, a penicillinase inhibitor in an amount of 20% by weight or less based on the weight of the cephalosporin-antibiotic, and a pH indicator which may be bromcresol purple is provided. A cephalosporinase producing bacteria can be judged by smearing a sample containing bacteria to be tested on the testing agent and observing the color tone change. According to this agent, cephalosporinase-active penicillinase producing bacteria are judged cephalosporinase-negative owing to the action of the penicillinase inhibitor, which may be clavulanic acid. Therefore, since only cephalosporinase producing bacteria are judged cephalosporinase-positive, this agent enables error free judgment.

  • Patent number: 5170799
Abstract: Disclosed is a test strip for measuring tear production. The test strip comprises a generally flat sheet material having one end rounded to be semi-circular shaped and being printed with a folding line along which said strip is bent prior to the measurement operation. The test strip is further printed with graduation marks and a scale for indicating the amount of absorbed tear. In a preferred embodiment, provided at either one or both corners of the end opposite to the rounded end is a mark indicating that the particular test strip is used for measuring one of either the left or right eye. The sheet material is preferably made of filter paper. The test strip has no notched portion which would weaken the sheet material and yet may be folded precisely along the fold line prior to use. The graduation marks and scales printed on the test strip enable easy measurement of the length of the portion wetted by tear fluid.
