Publication number: 20240223385Abstract: Chains of cryptographic certificates are used for server authentication in a recursive manner. A device requires a Root certificate to authenticate a server, where the Root certificate is changed periodically. Each Root certificate is signed using a prior Root certificate. When a device is required to perform an authentication, multiple Root certificates forming a chain are provided to the device. The device authenticates the first Root certificate in the chain using a previously stored Root certificate, and authenticates each other Root certificate in the chain using a prior Root certificate in the chain. Upon authenticating the last Root certificate in the chain, the authentication can be completed. An associated server is also provided. The device can store the last Root certificate in the chain for use in defining subsequent chains.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2022Publication date: July 4, 2024Applicant: SIERRA WIRELESS, INC.Inventor: Alex JIANG

Patent number: 11399355Abstract: There is provided a method and user equipment that enable the evaluation of the validity of a timing advance known to a UE for enabling the UE to transmit using preconfigured uplink resources (PUR). The method includes receiving data enabling determination of a measured change in a reference signal received power by a UE. The UE subsequently determines if the measured change in the RSRP is less than a positive change threshold. If the determination is true, the UE proceeds with the transmission using PUR. In some embodiments, prior to proceeding with the transmission, the UE further evaluates or determines if the measured change in the RSRP is greater than a negative change threshold. The UE will subsequently use PUR for the transmission only if the measured change in the RSRP is greater than a negative change threshold.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2020Date of Patent: July 26, 2022Assignee: Sierra Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Gustav Gerald Vos, Amr Adel Nasr Abdelnasser, Lutz Hans-Joachim Lampe

Patent number: 11229028Abstract: The present technology provides a computer-implemented method and system for performing frequency selective scheduling between a user equipment (UE) and a base station. The UE selects a sub-band within a predetermined system bandwidth based on observed radio conditions. The UE then communicates the selected sub-band to the base station. The base station then selects a LTE resource block having a frequency range falling within the sub-band. The selected resource block is then used for communication between the base station and the UE. The process may be repeated at a frequency related to the channel coherence.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2016Date of Patent: January 18, 2022Assignee: SIERRA WIRELESS, INC.Inventors: Gustav Gerald Vos, Ramon Khalona, Steven John Bennett

Patent number: 10977024Abstract: There is provided methods and apparatuses for secure updating of firmware/software. The methods and apparatus can be enabled by making use of the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) to request the revocation status of certificates in the certificate chain. In particular, a method called ‘OCSP stapling’ can ensure the validity of the certificates or verify authenticity of the software/firmware. By virtue of features of the OCSP stapling, the user device does not need to contact CAs directly for the purpose of verifying the status of the certificates that ensure authenticity and integrity of the delivered software/firmware and thus is not required to open an extra communication channel to obtain status of certificates. This process can also reduce the burden on CAs because the CAs are neither required to keep a large volume of CRLs nor to maintain connection with user devices for which the CAs are responsible.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2018Date of Patent: April 13, 2021Assignee: SIERRA WIRELESS, INC.Inventor: Alex Jiang
