Publication number: 20040117656Abstract: The present invention provides a solution in which a script containing general security parameters and access policies in a file is placed on an appropriate internal server. The location of the script may then be stored on an external server. When an end-user within the organization decides to purchase a wireless network device, he may attach it to his existing computer. The computer then may retrieve the security file location from the external server, retrieve the security file from the internal server using the security file location, and program the security file into the wireless device.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 17, 2002Publication date: June 17, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc. a Canadian corp.Inventor: Joseph Peter Robert Tosey

Publication number: 20040090802Abstract: A method and apparatus for suppressing noise caused by the switching of a switching power supply. The method and apparatus use frequency dithering techniques to distribute the switching noise and its spurious products over a wider bandwidth, thereby reducing the average peak power per given range of bandwidth. The frequency dithering techniques are particularly applicable to mobile radio applications, where switching noise from switching power supplies can modulate the transmit carrier and its harmonics, sub-harmonics and intermediate frequency products.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 1, 2002Publication date: May 13, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventors: Behrouz Pourseyed, Trong Hoang

Publication number: 20040080215Abstract: A switching circuit operative to switch between a first and second power source to an output is disclosed. The circuit comprises a MOSFET switch electrically connected to the first and second power sources and operative to provide power from either one of the power sources to the output. The circuit includes a RC network electrically connected to a gate of the MOSFET switch. The RC network is operative to delay switching between the first and second power sources such that the second power source has the opportunity to fully ramp-up in order to provide continuous power to the output. Accordingly, the second power source can fully provide power to the output when the power is switched from the first power source to the second power source.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 23, 2002Publication date: April 29, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventors: Samir Hadzimusic, Simon Au

Publication number: 20040068666Abstract: An application processor is electrically and logically decoupled from a wireless data network module so that it may go to sleep independently. A security association may be established between the wireless data network module and a wireless data network. Then the application processor may be placed in a suspend state while maintaining the security association between the wireless data network module and the wireless data network. This allows email polling, for example, to occur without having to re-establish the security association by logging in again.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2002Publication date: April 8, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc. a Canadian Corp.Inventor: Joseph Peter Robert Tosey

Publication number: 20040066418Abstract: The present invention utilizes input handling to provide enter-then-act capability for user inputs. User inputs are received, and a set of one or more secondary applications are executed using the input. A priority rating may then be calculated for each of the one or more secondary applications in the set, the priority rating indicating how pertinent the input was to a corresponding application.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2002Publication date: April 8, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc. a Canadian CorporationInventor: Joseph Peter Robert Tosey

Patent number: 6712627Abstract: An ejection assembly for ejecting a modem from a wireless communication device is provided. The wireless communication device provides communication capability for a personal data assistant. In one embodiment of the present invention, the ejection assembly includes both an ejector sleeve which holds a variety of modems and a lever arm. The ejector sleeve couples the modem with the wireless communication device to establish connectivity between the wireless communication device and the modem. The ejector sleeve also decouples the modem with the wireless communication device and ejects the modem from the wireless communication device. The modem decouples and ejects from the wireless communication device when a user pushes the ejector sleeve into the wireless communication device, thereby rotating the lever arm. The rotation of the lever arm decouples the modem and ejects the modem from the wireless communication device.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 2001Date of Patent: March 30, 2004Assignee: Sierra Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Matthew J. Patent number: 6697030Abstract: A tunable dual band antenna system is disclosed. The system includes a transceiver, a matching network and an antenna. The matching network is operable to tune the antenna to the transceiver at both a first and second frequency. Accordingly, the matching network has a variable capacitor, an inductor and a second capacitor. The value of the variable capacitor is chosen to tune the antenna at the first frequency and the second frequency such that the system can be used to transmit and receive electromagnetic energy over two bandwidths. The values of the variable capacitor, the inductor, and the second capacitor are chosen to minimize the standing wave ratio of the system at both the first frequency and the second frequency.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2002Date of Patent: February 24, 2004Assignee: Sierra Wireless, Inc.Inventor: Andrey Gleener

Publication number: 20030224751Abstract: A receiver with reduced near field noise is described. The receiver has a far range receiving section configured to sense a desired signal that includes near field noise. The receiver further includes a near range receiving section configured to sense a near field noise reference signal. An adaptive noise canceller (ANC) of the receiver is configured to detect the magnitude of an error vector from the far range receiving section. The ANC is configured to adjust the phase and gain of the near field noise reference signal in response to the magnitude of the error. Accordingly, the ANC can generate a corrected near field noise reference signal that is added to the desired signal with an adder. The near field noise is canceled by the addition of the corrected near field noise signal. The ANC uses a least mean square technique to determine the amount of correction needed.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 4, 2002Publication date: December 4, 2003Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Ronald John Vanderhelm, Wenkai Zhong, Peter R.H. Patent number: 6643501Abstract: In a superheterodyne receiver, energy can bypass a filter by magnetically coupling to a metallic radio frequency shield. This is especially a problem with small form factor devices in which the metallic radio frequency shield is positioned close to the filter. By using a ferrite-embedded element positioned between the filter and the RF shield, some of the undesired harmonics produced by the mixer can be dissipated into heat.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1999Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Assignee: Sierra Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Trent McKeen, Dominque Kwong

Patent number: 6561851Abstract: A PC card which releasably engages with a SIM card is provided. The PC card includes a SIM carriage having an ejection assembly and a locking mechanism. The ejection mechanism allows for insertion of the SIM card within the SIM carriage. The locking mechanism locks the SIM card within the SIM carriage upon insertion of the card within the SIM carriage. Additionally, the ejection assembly automatically ejects the SIM card from the SIM carriage upon de-activation of the locking mechanism. Patent number: 6516204Abstract: An inexpensive, PCMCIA-based radio transceiver is provided that interfaces to a separate baseband modem, which may itself be PCMCIA-based or may be an internal modem of a notebook computer. Together, the PCMCIA-based radio transceiver and the baseband modem realize a wireless modem. In order to miminize cost and increase versatility of the resulting wireless modem, the radio transceiver is a relatively unintelligent, protocol-agnostic, slave device that is controlled by commands issued by the baseband modem. The baseband modem may be a hardware modem or a software modem. In either case, the character of the baseband modem may be changed by downloading new software. The radio transceiver may also be exchanged for another within a family of radio transceivers, each of which customized for a particular radio standard. The result is an extremely flexible, extremely low-cost wireless modem solution.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1996Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Sierra Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Gregory John Funk, Ronald John Vanderhelm
