  • Publication number: 20140327766
Abstract: Methods and apparatus related to smart surveillance camera operation and implementation are described. A smart surveillance camera stores a map corresponding to an area subject to monitoring. The camera provides at least one image detected by said camera and at least a portion of the stored map in conjunction with the at least one image detected by said camera, e.g., to a wireless communications device of an emergency responder in its local vicinity. Current camera position and/or viewing controls such as camera angle setting and/or zoom, are sometimes used, to determine the portion of the overlay map to be communicated in conjunction with a video stream. Externally detectable trigger events, e.g., from a 911 call or from a gunshot audio detector, and/or internally detectable trigger events, e.g., a detected mob in the camera viewing area, are sometimes used to initiate transmission of a video stream and corresponding map overlay.

  • Patent number: 8482609
Abstract: Camera based surveillance system planning methods and apparatus are discussed. A surveillance system integration tool, which may be downloaded into a user's computer system, allows for the insertion and orientation of surveillance cameras onto a map, e.g., a downloaded satellite based map. The integration tool presents the user with various surveillance system planning options. A user selects between various available camera types, e.g., visible vs IR spectrum, and between various camera configuration settings, with the user's selections being received and processed by the integration tool. The integration tool allows a user, e.g., a potential customer, to manipulate camera positioning, orientation, and/or settings, thus changing coverage areas for surveillance. The integration tool outputs for display and/or hardcopy a generated output plan including a map with an overlay including at least one inserted camera indication and a corresponding camera surveillance coverage area indication.

  • Patent number: 8471910
Abstract: A coordinated surveillance system uses a larger number of fixed low resolution detection smart camera devices and a smaller number of pan/tilt/zoom controllable high resolution tracking smart camera devices. The set of detection cameras provide overall continuous coverage of the surveillance region, while the tracking cameras provide localized high resolution on demand. Each monitor camera device performs initial detection and determines approximate GPS location of a moving target in its field of view. A control system coordinates detection and tracking camera operation. A selected tracking camera is controlled to focus in on, confirm detection, and track a target. Based on a verified detection, a guard station is alerted and compressed camera video is forwarded to the guard station from the camera(s). The guard station can direct a patrol guard to the target using GPS coordinates and a site map.

  • Patent number: 8139112
Abstract: A smart camera device incorporates a first processing path for video display processing and a second processing path for detection and/or tracking processing. A sensor device provides input signals including first size data units to both processing paths, at least some of the same input signals are processed by both processing paths. The video display processing generates second size data units which are smaller than first size data units. First size data units provide more information to the detection/processing module than second size data units would have provided if used. IR detection capability is improved by using first size data units. Detection and/or target tracking operations generate control signals used to control the video display processing to enhance the visual perceptibility of a detected target.
