  • Publication number: 20250354465
Abstract: A contingency for non-operation of a valve in a side pocket mandrel of production tubing includes creating a selective barrier to fluid communication across sidewalls of the production tubing. The barrier is formed by an insert that is installed in the side pocket mandrel, which includes a valve that responds to pressures inside and outside the production tubing to selectively allow fluid flow across the production tubing sidewalls. Types of the valve include a surface controlled gas lift valve, an inflow control valve, and an inflow control device.

  • Publication number: 20250354464
Abstract: A contingency valve provides redundancy to a surface controlled flow control valve for blocking flow into production tubing from a surrounding annulus when the surface controlled flow control valve is not operational. The surface controlled flow control valve and the contingency valve are disposed in an eccentric portion of the production tubing, and include valve members that are selectively disposed in a path of the flow within a sidewall of the production tubing. Valve members in the contingency valve are urged into the flow path by pressurizing hydraulic fluid downhole or by using a shifting tool. The types of surface controlled flow control valves include an inflow control device, an inflow control valve, and a gas lift valve.

  • Publication number: 20250122778
Abstract: A valve system controls flow into a downhole production string, and which includes a downhole valve with a port formed in a sidewall of a production string disposed in a wellbore, and a sleeve that is slidable along the production string to block or allow flow through the port. An actuator assembly exerts a sliding force onto the sleeve, and is made up of multiple actuators arranged along an outer surface of the production string. Each actuator has an electrically powered motor and a stem connected to the motor. An opposite end of each stem connects to an end of the sleeve. Energizing the motors causes linear movement of the stems and connected sleeve to open and close the valve.

  • Publication number: 20230083821
Abstract: An apparatus for producing fluid from a wellbore includes production tubing in the wellbore, an annulus around the tubing, and a chemical injection system for injecting chemical additive into the production tubing from the annulus. The chemical additive system includes an injection module with a valve that is selectively opened and closed by operating an actuator. When the valve is opened, the chemical additive is injected into the tubing in response to a pressure differential between the annulus and tubing. The injection module is surface-controlled and downhole conditions are monitored, so that a flow of chemical additive injection is initiated, adjusted, or suspended in real time.

  • Patent number: 11326425
Abstract: A lift gas injection system that is used for introducing lift gas into a stream of production fluid includes a lift gas injection valve. A pressure protection system guards the injection valve against external overpressure by blocking communication to inside the injection valve housing when ambient pressure exceeds a set pressure. Communication is blocked by moving a valve member so that it obstructs flow through an opening in the housing. The system includes pressure actuated valve which has a platen mounted to an end of a bellows, and a valve member coupled to the platen. Surface area is reduced on the bellows side of the platen that creates a force imbalance on the platen from applied ambient pressure. At the set pressure the force imbalance moves the platen, and which pushes the valve member against the opening. A compressible pressure compensator inside the injection valve protects against internal overpressure.

  • Patent number: 11125058
Abstract: A method of estimating a real time production flowrate from a well by estimating a real time flowrate of a marker fluid in the well, and comparing the estimated flowrate with a baseline marker fluid flowrate; where the baseline marker fluid flowrate correlates to baseline production fluid flowrate. The baseline marker fluid flowrate is obtained by introducing an amount of a marker fluid in the well, monitoring the time over which the marker fluid travels a set distance, and estimating a flowrate of the marker fluid based on the monitored time and amount of marker fluid. The real time production flowrate is obtained by extrapolating the baseline production fluid flowrate by an amount derived from a comparison of the baseline and real time marker fluid flow rates.

  • Publication number: 20210238967
Abstract: A method and system of producing fluid from a well with a gas lift system that includes a virtual plunger made from a plunger forming material. The virtual plunger is formed downhole by injecting the plunger forming material directly into a column of liquid inside production tubing and from an annulus that circumscribes the production tubing. The flow of plunger forming material into the production tubing is controlled by an injection valve intersecting a sidewall of the production tubing. The plunger forming material is added to the annulus from the surface, and enough is added so its upper level is above the injection valve. Adding injection gas to the production tubing below the virtual plunger pushes the virtual plunger and column of liquid to surface. The plunger forming material has properties so that the virtual plunger remains cohesive while traveling uphole.
