Abstract: A file transfer system including a client and a server capable of updating portions of the file stored on the server. The system is capable of uploading portions of a file before the file has been specified at the client side. The files are stored in raw at the client and the server, which preserves the block list mapping. The file transfer protocol is capable of compressing and encrypting transferred data. As a result, the partial file writes are possible while maintaining current bandwidth usage. The write request data structure is provided with additional features in the form of flags and fields to provide reliable transmission of partial file data.

Abstract: Audio files can be synchronized with a plurality of individual slides, so that a single audio file may be played across multiple individual slides. A user interface is provided which provides a slide timeline and an audio timeline of the entire audio sequence with markers located adjacent the slide timeline indicating particular slides. The user may slide the markers along the slide timeline. The location of the marker is an indication to transition to the indicated slide. As the audio timeline is positioned adjacently and the audio can be played while the slide markers are adjusted, individual slides can be readily synchronized along an audio sequence with little effort.

Abstract: File and folder names are converted between their native format and a shared resource locator format. To send information on a file or folder, the file or folder name is parsed into various components and those components are converted to components in the shared resource locator. Sufficient information is provided in the shared resource locator to allow receiving software to develop the proper full native file or folder name, irrelevant of the receiving system, be it having different native formats, different drive letters and the like. A user need only click on a file or folder and a shared resource locator string is provided for pasting into emails or documents. Clicking on a shared resource locator results in the operating system automatically opening the file or folder from its shared location without manual conversions and the like.

Abstract: File systems which provide several different and improved locking capabilities. An application on a client workstation communicates through a client driver to a server which interfaces with a metadata database, which contains locking information about the files. Applications perform as normal. The client driver provides lock and unlock requests to the server when a write lock or a read with intent to write lock is required. If only a read lock is considered appropriate, the client driver does not provide a lock request. The server transparently performs read operations and read locking using the metadata database without specific requests from the client driver. When a read with intent to write or write lock is required, the lock ownership is placed with a given expiration time. When the time expires the lock is not automatically released but remains with the particular requesting client driver until another client driver requests it.

Abstract: A messaging system is disclosed that provides dynamic polling of a message server for use in a stateless communication system. The polling interval may be determined by a user, or it may be determined based on current message activity or on statistics derived from historical message activity. Application-to-application, as well as human-to-human, messaging capability is also disclosed.

Abstract: An intermediate program which is provided at the PIM database server so that file system requests are treated as requests to provide responses for the contact and calendar information as interchange format files, without the need for a front end program or other specialized program on the user computer. The user opens the file manager program and requests a file listing for the server containing the PIM item database. The intermediate program receives the query from the file manager program and queries the PIM item database to determine the contact and calendar items accessible by the user. These items are then provided to the file manager program as standard interchange format files. The user then only need copy the file, at which time are intermediate program converts the proprietary database format information into the interchange file format, and attach it or paste it as desired.

Abstract: Securing computer files in which a publish permission is present in a file system. Upon receiving a request to write data from one file to another, the file system determines whether publish permission is needed. If so and the user lacks the publish permission, the request is rejected. Disclosed is securing computer files which include encrypting metadata about an encrypted file and storing both the encrypted file and the encrypted metadata. The metadata includes a key for decrypting the encrypted file. The key for decrypting the metadata is stored in a USB security token. Disclosed is securing computer files which include copying material from a window displaying the contents of a file to a clipboard application. The file or window is associated with the material. The clipboard application can deny a request to paste material associated with one file to a window displaying the contents of a different file.

Abstract: A remote document editing system and method are disclosed that permit users of wireless devices having limited capabilities to remotely edit and manage documents located and stored on a central or network server. The document to be edited is separated into text and format components or segments and only the text segment is typically sent or transmitted to the remote device. After editing or review of the document text is complete, the text segment is returned to the network server, where it is recombined with the format segment to reconstruct a new document having edited text but formatting unchanged from the original document.

Abstract: A method and system are provided for the creation and use of custom-configured, database-backed, remotely accessible applications. Users of client devices (60) access an application generator server (30) via a network (50), providing configuration for a requested application. Through direct communication with the server (30), off-line use of an application or script, or by following a server-generated link, remote users execute the application subject to data type, formatting, and display characteristics and/or constraints provided in the application configuration information. Other applications hosted on the client device, server, or on another server (in communication with the application generator server) can exchange data with the generated application.

The files may be selected from any memory accessible to the terminal including locally accessible memory and remotely accessible memory. The files are archived to a user space within a writable stable memory connected to the remote computer and may be restored to their original memory location in response to user commands from the terminal.
