  • Publication number: 20090206958
Abstract: According to one embodiment, there is provided a semiconductor digital communication device comprising communication drive and sense electrodes formed in a single plane, where the electrodes have relatively high sidewalls. The relatively high sidewalls permit low electrical field densities to be obtained in the sense and drive electrodes during operation, and further permit very high breakdown voltages to be obtained between the electrodes, and between the drive electrode and an underlying ground plane substrate. The device effects communications between drive and receive circuits through the drive and sense electrodes by capacitive means, and in a preferred embodiment is capable of effecting relatively high-speed digital communications. The device may be formed in a small package using, by way of example, CMOS or other semiconductor fabrication and packaging processes.

  • Publication number: 20090206244
Abstract: Disclosed are various embodiments of a reflective optical encoder having at least three channels—two data channels and one index channel—disposed along a common axis or single track. The single track configuration disclosed herein permits very high resolution reflective optical encoders in small packages to be provided. In addition, the single track configuration reduces problems with misalignment between code scales and light detectors, permits relatively simple electronic circuitry to be used to process outputs, and reduces manufacturing, assembly, integrated circuit and encoder costs. Methods of making and using such optical encoders are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7574458
Abstract: A method, computer program product and system for backing up and restoring files using systems with available disk space. A daemon application may be installed on systems with available disk space to store backup files. The daemon application may transmit data to a central system that indicates the amount of available disk space on its system. The central system may create a master file that includes a listing of systems with available disk space and the amount of available disk space for each listed system. A backup application may be installed on systems whose files are to be backed up. The backup application may be configured to download the master file and determine which systems from the master file are to receive the files to be backed up from its system. By storing backup files on systems with available disk space, a company may reduce its cost in backing up files.

  • Patent number: 7573931
Abstract: A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser incorporating a supported air gap distributed Bragg reflector is disclosed. The supported air gap DBR includes a regrowth layer of material that provides mechanical support for the original material layers. The supported air gap DBR is fabricated by first growing alternating pairs of a first material and a sacrificial material over a suitable substrate. The layer pairs of the first material and sacrificial material are covered by a suitable dielectric material. The dielectric material is then selectively removed exposing regions of the first material and sacrificial material where selective regrowth of additional material is desired. The selective regrowth of the additional material provides mechanical support for the semiconductor material that remains after a selective etch removal of the sacrificial material.
