Abstract: An ergonomic insertion tool for insertion and retrieval of an arterial tamponade device which has an elongate connecting strut of resiliently deformable material and an arterial compressor at one end. The tool has a handle with a hand grip portion including an actuating trigger, and an elongate barrel. The barrel has a shaft and an outer sleeve telescopically engaged over the shaft. In a first position, a hooked distal end of the shaft protrudes from the sleeve to engage a bend between adjacent end portions of the connecting strut. On movement into a second position, the sleeve extends over the hooked end and compresses the deformable connecting strut into a deformed, U-shaped configuration to hold the device during insertion or retrieval. On movement back into the first position, the deformed device is released to spring out towards the expanded condition.

Abstract: An arterial tamponade device has an elongate connecting member of resiliently deformable material with pressure pads at each end of the member, and is expandable between a generally U-shaped or V-shaped collapsed condition and a fully expanded position. The device is inserted into a body cavity in its collapsed state and is released at a predetermined location so that opposite ends of the device are biased away from one another and the pressure pads engage and apply pressure to opposite wall areas of the body cavity before the device is fully expanded. One pressure pad has a bulbous end portion angled away from the connecting member and designed to engage and apply pressure to a predetermined tissue area which includes one or more blood vessels so as to occlude or partially occlude the vessel or vessels and reduce or cut off blood flow to the body cavity.

Abstract: An arterial tamponade device is expandable between a collapsed condition and an expanded position and has opposite ends, with an enlarged pad at one or both ends. The device is inserted into a body cavity in its collapsed condition and is released at a predetermined location so that opposite ends of the device are biased away from one another and apply pressure to opposite wall regions of the body cavity before the device is fully expanded, with a pad at one end positioned to apply pressure to a predetermined tissue area which includes a blood vessel so as to occlude or partially occlude the vessel and reduce or cut off blood flow to the body cavity. The pad may have a bulbous projection configured to engage a depression of a body cavity wall region in which a blood vessel is located.
