  • Patent number: 5326931
Abstract: An electrical interface distribution unit (10) and method for interconnecting signal cables (60, 62, 64) in a cable housing (24) within a wall defined by sheets of material (16-18) spaced apart by studs (20) to define an interior wall volume wherein large numbers of cables must fit in a small volume interiorly of the wall and be interconnected by modules (70, 80) for distribution of input and output signals in a building.

  • Patent number: 5218552
Abstract: The present invention provides a controller that operates using two different processors. Each processor performs certain predetermined functions. A control processor is responsible for switching AC power distribution and control, while a message processor is responsible for messaging. A polling scheme and arbitration logic prevent data transfers relating to these two processors from interfering with each other. A configurable interface allows many different types of appliances to attach to the system, and a serial multimode interface further enhances the configurability of the system.

  • Patent number: 5190468
Abstract: An improved ribbon cable connector is described for providing connection between an electrical device and a ribbon cable. Receptacle modules and a splice module having identical outer dimensions are provided for insertion into the cover of a receptacle tap. Each receptacle module contains receptacle sites for insertion of pins from an electrical device. Each receptacle site of the receptacle module is connected to an insulator displacement pin that is used to establish a connection with a conductor of a ribbon cable. A splice module connects pairs of insulator displacement pins together so that two different ribbon cables can be connected together in an efficient manner. Alignment projections on both the receptacle and splice modules allow for precise positioning of the insulator displacement pins within each module with the conductors of the ribbon cable.

  • Patent number: 5185580
Abstract: A electrical transmission line termination device capable of performing various termination requirements including matching the line impedance of wires in a transmission line with load impedances, electrically connecting conductors in a transmission line for maintaining electrical continuity, detecting improper wiring of the various wires in a transmission line, and connecting a cable shielding conductor to a ground wire.

  • Patent number: 5126934
Abstract: An automated gas distribution system for safely and reliably controlling the flow of gaseous fuel to gas appliances. The system implements a "closed-loop" delivery of gas, i.e., the gas is provided to a recongnized appliance only when that appliance sends a valid request for gas to a control/communications subsystem. Certain conditions preclude the supply of gas despite a valid request for gas and include an appliance or system malfunction, or a command from the system operator instructing the system to ignore certain gas requests. In addition, emergency conditions, such as a fire or gas leak will also circumvent the closed-loop delivery of gas to appliances.

  • Patent number: 5101191
Abstract: An automated system for providing different services within a house includes an appliance coordination data network for communicating relatively low speed appliance digital data within a house, a high capacity data network for transferring high speed digital data within the house, an energy distribution system for distributing energy throughout the house, an analog services distribution system for distributing conventional analog signals throughout the house and a video services distribution network for distributing video services throughout the house. The appliance coordination network interfaces with the energy distribution system to control the flow of energy to appliances throughout the house responsive to a digital request or interrogation signal that is emitted from the appliance itself.

  • Patent number: 5045823
Abstract: The present invention utilizes a coupling tap that contains two parallel communication paths from the connection at a coaxial cable to a tap output, to which a device can be connected. One path passes high frequency signals of 30-900 megahertz, while the other passes lower frequency communication signals of 0-5 megahertz as well as DC power. Furthermore, each tap may contain a line isolating inductor that, when a particular tap is in use, isolates the portion of the coaxial cable that continues on past the tap in use for signals from 0-5 megahertz. This eliminates reflections and other line disturbances from entering the tap in use.

  • Patent number: 5043531
Abstract: A wiring layout for new home construction in which primarily two different cables distribute various electrical signals from a central location to different rooms in a home. The first cable, an AC power and internal communications cable, is a ribbon cable containing power conductors and digital data conductors. A predetermined number of lengths of this ribbon cable form that number of branches from the central location to different areas of the home. The second cable, the external communications cable, is a cable containing coaxial conductors and twisted wire pairs in one casing. This cable is run from the central location to a splitter. A predetermined number of lengths of the second cable are then run from the splitter to selected locations in some or all the rooms. The resulting layout from this combination branch-star layout allows efficient transmission of signals through a home and enables reduced installation costs.

  • Patent number: 4947278
Abstract: A remote control power disconnect circuit for providing a ground fault across an electrical outlet when an unsafe condition such as a lost neutral or shorting of the AC power switch is detected. The remote control power disconnect circuit is placed at each electrical outlet within a dwelling and applies AC power to the outlet only when an appliance (load) is plugged into the outlet and no fault condition is detected. However, when a fault condition is detected, the circuit also functions to apply a ground fault across the outlet and to shut-off the supply of AC power to the outlet. Then, once the fault condition has been remedied, the circuit may be remotely reset so that AC power may again be applied to the electrical outlet.
