Patents Assigned to Smith Brothers (Whitehaven) Limited
  • Patent number: 4994638
Abstract: A self-supporting tray-like product container (especially for food) having an inner dished part for accommodating the product in a first well, and an outer dished part having a second well into which the first well protrudes, the inner and outer parts contacting and being joined to each other at their respective peripheral edges otherwise with their wells in all-round mutually-spaced relation. The spacing provides thermal and/or shock insulation and allows the inner and outer parts to be made of different materials especially one having different thermal deformation resistances which allows use of the package in either a conventional or a microwave oven or both according to the materials chosen.

  • Patent number: 4468811
Abstract: A pouch comprises two opposed webs having respective side and bottom portions sealed together thereby leaving an unsealed end whereat one of the opposed webs extends beyond the free edge of the other of the opposed webs to form a flap. The flap is foldable onto over an edge portion of the other web. An area of pressure sensitive adhesive, which is disposed on the flap, extends through a position for normal folding of the flap, so that the flap is foldable within the area covered by the adhesive to bring that latter into direct sealing contact at the flap fold. The flap is foldable along a rupturable portion which extends across the width of the flap. The relatively readily rupturable portion, which defines a fold line, comprises a perforated line of weakness or a scored line of weakness.

  • Patent number: 4331491
Abstract: In a method of making packaging, especially for steam-sterilizable medical or pharmaceutical products, a tinted plastics sheet is formed as a laminate (34) comprising two substantially transparent sheets (10, 30) bonded together by a tinted adhesive (15). The sheet is then heat-sealed in selected areas (50, 52, 54) to a second sheet (40) to form a pouch (56) or tube to receive the product. The arrangement ensures that one of the films will be between the adhesive and the product so that colorant cannot migrate and contaminate the product when subjected to high temperatures and vacuum during steam-sterilization.The outer film may be polyester, the inner film a heat-sealable material such as cast polypropylene, and the second sheet may be paper.
