Patent number: 6988569Abstract: A rolling cone drill bit is provided that has gage inserts on the first row from the bit axis to cut to full gage diameter that have a cutting portion enhanced with a layer of super abrasive material. The gage cutting surface has a center axis that is canted to be more normal to the gage curve such that the its point of contact at gage is away from the thinner portion of the layer of super abrasive material.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2005Date of Patent: January 24, 2006Assignee: Smith InternationalInventors: Alan W. Lockstedt, Gary R. Portwood, Scott D. McDonough

Patent number: 6948403Abstract: A method of forming milled teeth on a roller cone of a milled tooth roller cone rock bit includes shaping a crest of a chisel shaped milled tooth on the roller cone. The crest is shaped such that the crest has a convex profile from one corner to an opposite corner of the crest. Such a crest is adapted to produce at least one of a convex axial stress distribution, a substantially even axial stress distribution, and a substantially smooth axial stress distribution. Further, the forming includes radiusing each of the corners at the ends of the crest of the chisel shaped milled tooth.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2003Date of Patent: September 27, 2005Assignee: Smith InternationalInventor: Amardeep Singh

Patent number: 6918455Abstract: A percussion drill bit is provided that has at least two different pluralities of inserts extending from the bit head to better match the conditions seen on the bit head during drilling. The preferred embodiment has a plurality of large inserts with a polycrystalline diamond layer located at least in the gage row and a plurality of smaller inserts located at least in the inner rows.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1998Date of Patent: July 19, 2005Assignee: Smith InternationalInventors: John Adam Meyers, Carl W. Patent number: 6392190Abstract: An automated hardfacing system useful for hardfacing roller cones is disclosed. The automated system includes a robot with an arm, a positioner, and a controller which co-ordinates the alignment of the robot and the positioner. The robot holds a hardfacing torch and is capable of movement in three axes of movement. These axes are the x, y, and z axes of the Cartesian co-ordinate system. The positioner holds a roller cone and is capable of movement in at least two axes of movement. The movement includes tilting and rotation about a Cartesian axis. The hardfacing coating produced by the automated system has improved quality and consistency as compared to the one obtained by a manual process.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1998Date of Patent: May 21, 2002Assignee: Smith InternationalInventors: J. Albert Sue, Zhigang Fang, Alysia Canson White

Patent number: 4696502Abstract: A dual string packer is milled by a mill having an annular milling shoe for milling the periphery of the packer and freeing it from the well bore. An axial milling head mills a central hole in the top of the packer before the annular shoe reaches the locking segments. A grapple above the milling head engages the walls of the axial hole to support the remains of the packer in the well. The grapple includes a release ring that can be broken in tension to release the packer mill from a stuck packer if need be. The grapple has a gripper sleeve with longitudinally extending fingers and a camming sleeve for camming the fingers outwardly. An expandable ring inside the camming sleeve provides means for withdrawing the camming sleeve from the gripper sleeve if it should stick.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1985Date of Patent: September 29, 1987Assignee: Smith InternationalInventor: Praful C. Desai
