  • Patent number: 5950476
Abstract: The present invention is to tension and guide hot strip for coiling in a hot strip mill, the hot strip mill includes a runout table with driven rollers for delivering hot strip from a train of finishing mill stands along a pass line of a runout table to a coiler. The coiler having driven mandrel for coiling strip thereon and pinch rolls having an operative position to direct the leading end of strip from the runout table to the coiler and tension the deflected leading end portion of strip during the formation of initial convolutions of coiled strip on the driven mandrel. Gag roll assembly upstream of the pinch rolls at the runout table for tensioning strip conveyed by the runout table after a trailing strip end emerges from the train of finishing mill stands.

  • Patent number: 5551981
Abstract: A ferrous strip is galvanized by establishing an electrostatic potential on the strip which is then submerged on a fluidized bed of powdered galvanizing material and then allowing the adhered galvanized powder to be carried by the strip to a reflow station. The reflow station heats the strip and galvanizing material to liquidity the galvanizing material and establish the necessary alloy interface on the ferrous strip. Thereafter, the strip passes to a cooling zone wherein the reflowed galvanizing material is solidified before contacting a roller to use to direct the strip to the exit of the galvanizing apparatus. The atmosphere within the galvanizing apparatus is remained inert through the use of nitrogen which is also used as the fluid medium for the suspension of the galvanizing powder in the fluidized bed.

  • Patent number: 5211487
Abstract: A locking assembly for a bearing, such as a bearing for a rolling mill roll, the roll having a journal for the bearing, the bearing including a cylindrical sleeve member at its outermost end mounted on an axially outer portion of the journal, the end of the sleeve formed to have a radially inward shoulder, and a radially outwardly cylindrical projection, the shoulder having a wedge-shaped cam surface formed at its outer most axial surface, an axially movable outer nut constructed to pass over the journal and having a radially inwardly annular shoulder, the shoulder of the nut having a wedge-shaped cam surface arranged to cooperate with the cam surface of the sleeve shoulder to force the sleeve in an axially inward direction on its rotation when secured to the roll, the nut including several radially outward holes spaced angularly of the axis of the bearing for allowing the nut to be rotated, cooperative openings in the nut and the projection of the sleeve for receiving bolts for securing the nut to the sleeve

  • Patent number: 5090228
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a window layout and a work roll chock design of a four-high rolling mill stand, including two spaced upright housing posts having windows, in which the housing ports have roll bending devices for the work rolls and the chocks of the work rolls are mounted so as to be horizontally and vertically disposed relative to inner window chock support members, which in turn are connected to outer window blocks affixed to the housings. To effect a roll change of both work rolls as a unit with a roll change device arranged in front of the operator side window, the work roll chocks are provided with roll separator units for holding the rolls apart and stabilizing the unit and a locking device for preventing relative horizontal movement of the work rolls during a roll change.

  • Patent number: 4964324
Abstract: A side trimmer shear for metallic strip and the like travelling along a pass line including gear housings on opposite sides of the strip as it passes along the pass line. Means are provided for varying the angular positions of the gear housings with respect to the pass line. Upper and lower shear knives are carried on the gear housings for engaging and trimming the edges of the strip; while a rigid shaft extends between the gear housings. Gearing is carried within the gear housings for driving the shear knives; while a gear mounted on splines on the drive shaft is provided with gear teeth with curved side walls which permit angular variation of the positions of the gear housings with respect to the rigid drive shaft. The apparatus also includes chopper rolls carried on the gear housings which are driven by a similar rigid drive shaft and a gear provided with curved side walls.
