Patent number: 9071374Abstract: A communication system, network, interface, and port architecture are provided for transferring data via a network. The network can be configured by connecting ports in a daisy chain arrangement to achieve a ring architecture or topology. The network transmits data according to a specific protocol. A first port transmits frames containing frame count information which is divided into several pieces, with each piece being transmitted in a single frame. A second port receives the frames, stores them in a frame buffer, and reassembles the frame count information from a plurality of frames.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2008Date of Patent: June 30, 2015Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventors: Christopher Green, Claudius Becker

Patent number: 8972609Abstract: A network interface for the secure transmission of data comprises a functionally encapsulated unit that encompasses the elements required to ensure a minimum functionality of the network interface, with access from the outside of said encapsulated unit being possible only via specific shared services. Reliable transmission between nodes of a communication network is ensured by encapsulating a network interface of at least one of the nodes, and by ensuring a minimal functionality of the network interface.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2003Date of Patent: March 3, 2015Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventors: Herbert Hetzel, Reiner Klos, Patrick Heck, Christian Thiel

Patent number: 8885478Abstract: A communication system, network, interface, and port architecture are provided for transporting data across a network. The network can be arranged by connecting the ports in a daisy chain fashion to achieve a ring architecture or topology. The network forwards data according to a specific network protocol. A first port forwards frames having a preemptive acknowledge field before the payload. A second port receives these frames, stores them in a frame buffer and modifies the preemptive acknowledge field according to its available frame buffer capacity. Said first port controls its data flow according to the modified preemptive acknowledge field.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2008Date of Patent: November 11, 2014Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventors: Rainer P. Mueller, Horace C. Ho, Patrick Heck, David Knapp, Kevin Rolfes

Patent number: 8767755Abstract: A network router connects network nodes within a ring network for transferring frames of data within the network. The network router has a plurality of network ports which provide a physical interface to the network nodes. The network router further has a routing processor which is connected to the network ports. The routing processor is configured for receiving frames and transmitting frames at the same time. It reads a specific payload section from a received frame and places the data read from the specific payload section within another specific payload section of a frame to be transmitted.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2012Date of Patent: July 1, 2014Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventor: Christian Thiel

Patent number: 8761035Abstract: A communication system, network, interface, and port architecture are provided for transporting data across a ring network. A network node operating as a first timing master generates a set of frames, each frame having a preamble, a data field and a time count field, which represents a portion of the time information associated with the set of frames. This time information may include counted time units, like seconds, or a number of generated and transmitted over the network. As the individual frames of a set of frames are generated and sent on the network, they pass other network nodes and are forwarded through the ring bus to the first timing master which receives at least a portion of the set it is still generating. This enables a received time count field to be compared with a transmitted time count field of the same set. If the fields are identical, there is no other timing master on the bus.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2010Date of Patent: June 24, 2014Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventors: Christopher Green, Claudius Becker, Eric Matthew Ching

Patent number: 8279751Abstract: A communication system, network node, and communication port architecture are provided for transporting data across a ring network. If a network node detects a signal failure, the communication port of the network node configures itself as timing master and communicates a shutdown command to the other network nodes. In addition, the communication port sets an internal flag signaling this “signal off” event. All other network nodes, which receive the shutdown flag, do not set this internal status, and instead, save a status of “no fault saved.” Accordingly, it can be easily determined where the loss of signal occurred.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2010Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventors: Stefan Kerber, Robert Wilhelm

Patent number: 7701959Abstract: Network devices of a digital network for communication between a plurality of devices have a source for transmitting data into the network, and sinks for receiving data from the network. Managers (logical controllers) to which priorities are assigned in a hierarchical order manage connections between sources and sinks. Before setting up a connection, a manager first queries a negotiation administrator to obtain a right to negotiate with other managers and to set up connections. When all other managers having higher priorities also have granted the connection, the manager connects sources and sinks.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2007Date of Patent: April 20, 2010Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventors: Herbert Hetzel, Rainer Klos, Martin Miller

Patent number: 7668182Abstract: A network for data transmission comprises a plurality of sub-networks for transmitting data in data frames. The sub-networks have different transmission rates and are connected to each other via at least one gateway. The transmission of the data frames is effected with a defined timing relationship between the sub-networks.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2005Date of Patent: February 23, 2010Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventors: Herbert Hetzel, Patrick Heck, Christian Thiel

Patent number: 7623541Abstract: To transmit an anisochronic data stream on an isochronic transmission route with a plurality of channels over a transmission network, a number of channels is reserved by the transmitter before beginning the transmission, where the sum of the transmission capacities of the reserved channels just exceeds the bandwidth of the asynchronous data stream. During the course of transmission, the data of the anisochronic data stream are formed into packets; each packet is transmitted over the reserved channels. After a packet has been sent, unused portions of the reserved channels are filled with filler data that is discarded at the receiver, until sufficient data are again available at the transmitter to begin transmission of the next packet.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2007Date of Patent: November 24, 2009Assignee: SMSC Europe GmbHInventors: Andreas Stiegler, Harald Schöpp, Frank Bähren
