  • Patent number: 4143674
Abstract: A valve for use in an apparatus for supplying molten metal by means of a siphon to a furnace. A valve formed by a tube provided with two flanges is placed at the upper part of the siphon, this tube extending by a certain length below the level of the flanges, so as to form an annular space with each of the branches of the siphon in which the gas is trapped during decanting, which prevents the gaskets from being in contact with the molten metal.

  • Patent number: 4117880
Abstract: An improvement in casting machines in which the molten metal solidifies inside the groove of a wheel, consisting of replacing the steel band generally used for covering the groove by a double band. A first band of copper or of an alloy which is a good conductor of heat is used for dissipating heat but is not under any tension. The tension is provided by a steel band in two parts which bears on the sides of the copper band and keeps it in contact with the casting wheel. The invention applies in particular to the casting of blanks of charged aluminum alloys for the production of machine wire.

  • Patent number: 4106956
Abstract: A process is disclosed for facilitating extrusion or rolling of a solidified dendritic aluminum base alloy billit, or the like, by heating the billet to provide an inner liquid phase of below 25%, by weight, wherein the dendritic phase has started to develop into a primary solid globular phase without disturbing the solidified character of the billet, followed by working of the treated billet. The process enables a reduction in working pressure and results in improved mechanical properties of the product. Optionally, in the case of precipitation hardening aluminum base alloys, quenching of the workpiece is effected as it exits from the die or mill, followed by artificial or natural aging. In another embodiment, the composition of the alloy of the billet being treated contains an amount of hardening constituent whereby the composition of the globular solid phase of the product approximates the composition of the alloy per se.

  • Patent number: 4099314
Abstract: This invention concerns production by extrusion of hollow cylindrical bodies starting with granulated alloys of aluminum containing silicon. It consists of preparing the composition of the alloy in a liquid form, producing granules by centrifugal pulverization or atomization, introducing the granulated material into an extrusion press to obtain the hollow profile by extrusion and extruding the granular material within to form a cylindrical body. This invention is applicable to form hollow bodies and particularly sleeves of motors of high content silicon aluminum alloy through which size and distribution of primary silicon is improved over traditional casting methods.

  • Patent number: 4019927
Abstract: The invention relates to products forged in aluminum based alloys with a very low hydrogen content. These products are endowed with an isotropic structure of equi-axial grains, which furnish mechanical features substantially equal in all directions and they have a particularly low critical hardening speed. They are obtained by heat treatment at a temperature slightly higher than the temperature of the solid state. They allow a substantial lightening of certain parts, particularly in aeronautic constructions and the application of hardening in boiling water or even in air without substantial reduction of the mechanical characteristics.

  • Patent number: 3988180
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of heat treatment which is applied to forged aluminum alloys, whereby the mechanical characteristics and resistance against corrosion under tension are increased considerably. This method is characterized by heating prior to tempering, above the temperature of eutectic melting, while remaining below the temperature of the start of the melting at equilibrium. The liquid phase formed temporarily is resorbed progressively, while the formation of pores is avoided by a sufficiently low hydrogen content of the metal. The application of this procedure to several aluminum alloys made it possible to observe increases of the limit of elasticity and of the break load of the order of 7% and a non-rupture stress under tension in 30 days at least equal to 30 hb.

  • Patent number: 3980125
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for molding metals, alloys and plastics material under low pressure. A gas which is inert with respect to the material to be molded is injected at a controlled rate and in a controlled volume into the compression/expansion chamber of the apparatus during certain phases of the molding operation, while compressed air is used for establishing pressure in the chamber or furnace accommodating the crucible which contains the liquid material to be molded. By virtue of the invention, it is possible to avoid oxidation phenomena and to improve the quality of the moldings.

  • Patent number: 3960201
Abstract: The invention concerns an improved injection device for molding machines with a cooling chamber for casting of non-ferrous metals and alloys. It is characterized by a two-part piston, one part of which slides freely and coaxially inside the other, forming a chamber in which a gas, neutral with respect to the metal to be cast, is compressed by the forward movement of the piston by virtue of a stop-pin, then liberated and expanded at the end of injection in a container of liquid metal where it causes a balancing force effect and improves the filling of the mold. This device makes it possible to eliminate the "ramroddings" which occur in single-piston machines at the end of injection and to obtain cast products which are free of defects.
