  • Patent number: 7538632
Abstract: A feed-forward amplifier having a signal cancellation loop including a cancellation node that includes a gain controller and a phase controller. Each controller provides a discrete tap steering signal and modulates the corresponding tap steering signal with a discrete tracer signal that takes on a preselected sequence of values. The sequence chosen so that the tracer signal is mutually orthogonal to each other tracer signal over a preselected period. A gain and phase adjuster connected to the outputs of the controllers provides a controlled gain change and phase shift in the signal cancellation loop, the magnitude of the gain change and phase shift controlled by the corresponding tap steering signals presented to the gain and phase adjuster by the controllers. A detector, the input of which is connected to the cancellation node and the output of which is connected to the controllers, outputs a measure of the envelope of the signal at the cancellation node.

  • Patent number: 7529209
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for mitigating fading and/or poor reception at a receiver. The receiver includes configurations each of which can provide different reception characteristics. The receiver evaluates the reception quality of the radio signal with the antenna in a first configuration and with the antenna in at least a second configuration and selects the antenna configuration that has the best evaluated reception for use until a subsequent iteration, when the process is repeated. The antenna configurations can correspond to configurations wherein reception is favored in different directions or to configurations wherein different antennas are selected, each antenna being spaced from each other antenna. The method can also improve the reception of a signal transmitted by selecting an antenna configuration for transmissions which provides improved reception quality at the destination receiver.

  • Patent number: 7456706
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing an electrically adjustable RF delay in which a splitter splits an input signal into two signal paths, one signal path providing a delay fixed at an integral number of wavelengths of a desired center frequency and both signal paths providing electrically adjustable attenuation. A combiner combines the signals passing through the signal paths, such that the sum of the electrically-adjustable attenuation provided by the signal paths adds to unity, whereby the input signal is delayed by an adjustable time depending upon the attenuations provided by the signal paths.

  • Patent number: 7454223
Abstract: A system and method of determining the maximum uplink transmit power of a subscriber station from a remote base station where the subscriber station reports incidents of foldback in its radio to the base station. When the base station receives the report, it reduces the maximum uplink transmit power of the subscriber station. After a period of time lapses without any reports of foldback occurring, the base station increases the maximum uplink transmit power of the subscriber station.

  • Patent number: 7421279
Abstract: An apparatus, system and method for improving the SNR of a desired signal received at a receiver in a multiple access communication system is disclosed. The apparatus, system and method subtracts known or knowable signals from the total signal received at the receiver and the desired signal is then determined from the result of the subtraction. The known, or knowable, signals can be synchronization signals or other interfering channel signals transmitted by the transmitter, such as a wireless network base station, serving the receiver, such as a subscriber station in such a wireless network, and/or can be such signals transmitted by another transmitter, such as an adjacent base station, or an adjacent sector in multi-sector systems.

  • Publication number: 20080192676
Abstract: A data channel to transmit data from a transmitter to one or more of a plurality of receivers, each of which intermittently reports to the transmitter its reception quality of signals transmitted by the transmitter. The transmitter transmits the data in frames which include at least one block. Each block includes the same predefined number of traffic symbols, and includes a header portion and a payload portion. The header portion of each block is packaged for transmission in a robust manner, enhancing the probability that each receiver will be able to recover it and the header portion includes information required to recover the payload portion. The payload portion is, in accordance with the reception quality reported by the intended receiver, packaged to make efficient use of the transmission resources while ensuring a reasonable probability that the intended receiver will be able to recover the payload.

  • Publication number: 20080151854
Abstract: System and method for transmitting data over a communications link in at least two channels. At least one transmitter transmits data in the two channels simultaneously. At least one interleaver interleaves data to be transmitted in the two channels prior to transmission by the at least one transmitter. The at least one interleaver employs different sets of interleaving parameters when interleaving data to be transmitted in different channels, such that data to be transmitted in each channel is interleaved in a different pattern than data to be transmitted in the other channel(s). At least one receiver receives the data transmitted in at least one of the two channels. A de-interleaver, associated with the at least one receiver, employs the set of interleaving parameters corresponding to the at least one channel received by the at least one receiver to de-interleave data received by the at least one receiver.

  • Publication number: 20080123531
Abstract: A novel apparatus, system and method for transmitting data flows having different quality of service (QoS) attributes over a network link structured in two or more channels is provided. The method classifies arriving packets to determine their required/assigned QoS attributes and places the classified packets into one of several logical channel queues, the selected logical channel queue having an appropriate corresponding set of QoS attributes defined. A radio link controller examines the available channels and, for each channel, selects a logical channel queue whose contents will be transmitted thereon. The radio link controller determines the data transmission capacity for each channel and segments the contents of the selected logical channel to fit within the determined capacity. The selection of the logical channel queue is performed in accordance with the set of QoS attributes and thus each flow can have different QoS characteristics including priorities, reliabilities (ARQ, no ARQ, etc.).

  • Patent number: 7379478
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel system, method and apparatus for allocating power between at least two communication services that share a common power output limit. Two communication services particularly suited for the present invention are voice services and data services transmitted on the downlink of a wireless network. An embodiment of the method includes determining the actual consumption of power on the voice channels of the wireless network during a given time period, and allocating substantially the same amount of power to the voice channels for the next time period, thus allowing for the allocation of the remaining amount of power to the data services, and thereby allowing, for example, increased modulation of the data services and thereby improve overall rates of data transfer and/or reliability of data transmission.

  • Patent number: 7343543
Abstract: A system for transmitting data between stations, such as base stations and subscriber stations in a wireless telecommunications system, employs variable set of interleaving parameters for its interleaving operations. By using different set of interleaving parameters with the interleavers, data which would otherwise be aligned when transmitted from a station to many stations, or from many stations to a station, will not be aligned after interleaving has been performed. This reduces the peak to average ratio required for a transmitter and/or can reduce interference experienced at receivers in the system. This is especially true if a significant proportion of the otherwise aligned signals are symbols which require zero energy to transmit.

  • Patent number: 7302268
Abstract: A method of a receiver determining the timing of a signal transmitted in a time-slotted manner, the signal comprising a sequence of information which is repeated at a known interval and has at least a known minimum length. The method performs correlation operations between groups of received slots of information, the groups spaced by the known interval. The groups are moved through the received signal, adding and removing slots, to locate a maximum correlation value sum for the group which should correspond to the timing of the slot. The method also can be used to determine a frequency offset at the receiver and/or an initial phase.

  • Patent number: 7277696
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel system, method and apparatus of delivering interactive voice response services in a more efficient manner over a network. The system provides for the placement of a subscriber station local 28 to the subscriber and a gateway protocol converter at the base station 40. The gateway protocol converter converts bandwidth-intensive audio messages into compact data messages, which upon transmission to the subscriber station 28 are converted back into audio messages. By using data messages instead of audio messages over the network, bandwidth is saved on the network for other traffic. Another embodiment of the invention provides a method for transmitting subscriber responses utilizing the system.
