Patent number: 5361456Abstract: The invention regards a hinge interconnecting a first member and a second member for pivotal movement about an axis of rotation. The hinge comprises:(a) a first member having a first pivot retaining portion and a second pivot retaining portion, each of the pivot retaining portions being fixed to the first rotatable member along the axis of rotation; and(b) a second member having a first post member matable with and axially insertable into the first retaining portion, and further having a second post member matable with and laterally insertable into the second retaining portion.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1992Date of Patent: November 8, 1994Assignee: Southern Case, Inc.Inventor: John P. Newby, Sr.

Patent number: 5269046Abstract: The hinge includes a plurality of pintle members that are spaced from each other along the axis of the hinge and that are of generally semi-circular shape and have an arcuate outer surface on a first side thereof and a generally flat surface upon the opposite side thereof. The flat surfaces of some of the pintle members face in a direction opposite to that of the flat surfaces of other of the pintle members. The hinge further includes generally channel shaped knuckle members, some of which face in a first direction and other of which face in an opposite direction. Assembly of the hinge is effected by movement of the barrel and pintle members laterally into engagement with each other while maintaining confronting surfaces thereon in substantially coplanar relationship with each other.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1991Date of Patent: December 14, 1993Assignee: Southern Case, Inc.Inventor: John P. Newby, Sr.

Patent number: 5207723Abstract: The cabinet has a plurality of discrete sections that are formed of molded plastic material and that have mating male and female connectors thereon by which the sections can be easily and quickly joined together by unskilled persons having few if any tools. Sections of the cabinet include an upper section that is pivotally movable between forward and rearward positions relative to a rear section of the cabinet, and further include door sections that are pivotally movable relative to opposite side sections of the cabinet and to the bottom section. An elongate shaft, which may be and illustratively is part of a wheel assembly, extends through the opposite side and rear sections and secures the cabinet sections in place. Compartments and sliding drawers within the cabinet are adapted to receive articles of differing types. Movement is imparted to the cabinet by a handle secured to its rear section. Rails upon the rear section permit sliding movement of the cabinet up and down stairways.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1991Date of Patent: May 4, 1993Assignee: Southern Case, Inc.Inventor: John P. Newby, Sr.

Patent number: 5139294Abstract: A latch member of a case or similar container blow-molded from thermoplastic material is pivotally and permanently secured to the case by a bearing formed substantially simultaneously with and from the same thermoplastic material as the body of the case. Formation of a permanent bond between the bearing member and the latch member is avoided by employing a latch member formed of material having a higher melt temperature than the material used in the formation of the main body of the case and the bearing member, and also by effecting relative movement between the latch member and the bearing member while the thermoplastic material forming the bearing member is still in a heated condition. Apparatuses for positioning the latch member within the mold are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1991Date of Patent: August 18, 1992Assignee: Southern Case, Inc.Inventors: William W. Ward, Andrew E. Dembicks

Patent number: 5119937Abstract: A tray-like open-top base member of the case closely receives the lower portion of a chain saw upon downward movement of the saw into case base member, and automatically and releasably connects to the chain saw by resilient detent elements. Upward movement of the chain saw relative to the case base member automatic effects release of the detent elements. Tools and other articles used for operation or maintenance of the chain saw are stored within open-top storage compartments in the bottom of the case base member. The articles are retained within the compartments by the overlying main body of the chain saw, when the chain saw and case base member are interconnected, and some of the articles are also retained in their compartments by additional detent elements. A scabbard is releasably retained upon the cutting chain assembly of the chain saw by ribs that engage the opposite sides of the assembly, and by a flange upon the inner end of the scabbard.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1991Date of Patent: June 9, 1992Assignee: Southern Case, Inc.Inventor: Donald R. Reynolds, Jr.

Patent number: 4705168Abstract: Disclosed is a drawer divider system for dividing a drawer in a tool chest or the like into a plurality of compartments. The divider elements comprise one-piece plastic strips having integrally formed resilient arms at both ends for engaging the opposed sidewalls of the drawer. The divider is provided with a plurality of upwardly facing recesses in the form of inverted sawteeth along its length so that the recesses of adjacently positioned dividers may support articles therein.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1982Date of Patent: November 10, 1987Assignee: Southern Case, Inc.Inventor: William W. Patent number: 4662515Abstract: The plastic blow-molded container of the present invention is illustrated in the form of a tool chest including a lower tool compartment that is initially blow molded in a flat condition with side walls being simultaneously molded with and joined to a bottom wall by integral flexible plastic hinges so that the side walls can be raised up into right angular relationship with the bottom wall. The simultaneous blow molding of the walls of the compartment in flat condition with the bottom wall permits the integral formation of drawer supporting ribs extending inwardly from the side walls and also permits the formation of a compartment having a greater depth than has been possible in known types of unitary one-piece blow-molded containers. Support ledges are integrally formed on the interior walls and adjacent the living hinges so that the side and rear walls are rigidly supported on the support ledges when the rear and side walls are raised up into right angular relationship with the bottom wall.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1986Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Assignee: Southern Case, Inc.Inventor: John P.
