In particular the invention relates to therapeutic uses of a feijoa fruit extract, processes for preparing the extract, and compositions comprising the extract. The feijoa fruit extract of the invention can be used in the treatment and prevention of rheumatoid arthritis and Type-2 diabetes.

The extract also provides a hepatoprotective effect, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in mammals. A novel compound was identified in the extract and given the name edulilic acid.
