Patent number: 6748349Abstract: A general purpose program implemented on a computer analyzes steady state and transient flow in a complex fluid network, modeling phase changes, compressibility, mixture thermodynamics and external body forces such as gravity and centrifugal force. A preprocessor provides for the interactive development of a fluid network simulation having nodes and branches. Mass, energy, and specie conservation equations are solved at the nodes, and momentum conservation equations are solved in the branches. Contained herein are subroutines for computing “real fluid” thermodynamic and thermophysical properties for 12 fluids, and a number of different source options are provided for modeling momentum sources or sinks in the branches. The system of equations describing the fluid network is solved by a hybrid numerical method that is a combination of the Newton-Raphson and successive substitution methods.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1999Date of Patent: June 8, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Alok Kumar Majumdar, John W. Patent number: 6743632Abstract: Centrifugal analyzer and method for staining biological or non-biological samples in microgravity, wherein the method utilizes an increase in weight of a fluid sample as a function of g-load, to overcome cohesive and frictional forces from preventing its movement in a preselected direction. Apparatus is characterized by plural specimen reservoirs and channels in a slide, each channel being of differing cross-section, wherein respective samples are selectively dispensed, from the reservoirs in response to an imposed g-factor, precedent to sample staining. Within the method, one thus employs microscope slides which define channels, each being of a differing cross-section dimension relative to others. In combination therewith, centrifugal slide mounting apparatus controllably imposes g-vectors of differing magnitudes within a defined structure of the centrifuge such as a chip array.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2001Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: Universities Space Research AssociationInventors: Mark S. Patent number: 6744470Abstract: An apparatus for and a method of triggering a pulsed light source, in particular a laser light source, for predictable capture of the source by video equipment. A frame synchronization signal is derived from the video signal of a camera to trigger the laser and position the resulting laser light pulse in the appropriate field of the video frame and during the opening of the electronic shutter, if such shutter is included in the camera. Positioning of the laser pulse in the proper video field allows, after recording, for the viewing of the laser light image with a video monitor using the “pause” mode on a standard cassette-type VCR. This invention also allows for fine positioning of the laser pulse to fall within the electronic shutter opening. For cameras with externally controllable electronic shutters, the invention provides for background light suppression by increasing shutter speed during the frame in which the laser light image is captured.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1995Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: James E. Patent number: 6745014Abstract: A universal interface adapter circuit interfaces, for example, a wireless communications headset with any type of communications system, including those that require push-to-talk (PTT) signaling. The interface adapter is comprised of several main components, including an RF signaling receiver, a microcontroller and associated circuitry for decoding and processing the received signals, and programmable impedance matching and line interfacing circuitry for interfacing a wireless communications headset system base to a communications system. A signaling transmitter, which is preferably portable (e.g., handheld), is employed by the wireless headset user to send signals to the signaling receiver. In an embodiment of the invention directed specifically to push-to-talk (PTT) signaling, the wireless headset user presses a button on the signaling transmitter when they wish to speak. This sends a signal to the microcontroller which decodes the signal and recognizes the signal as being a PTT request.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2000Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Marc A. Patent number: 6738734Abstract: A computer implemented physical signal analysis method includes four basic steps and the associated presentation techniques of the results. The first step is a computer implemented Empirical Mode Decomposition that extracts a collection of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF) from nonlinear, nonstationary physical signals. The decomposition is based on the direct extraction of the energy associated with various intrinsic time scales in the physical signal. Expressed in the IMF's, they have well-behaved Hilbert Transforms from which instantaneous frequencies can be calculated. The second step is the Hilbert Transform which produces a Hilbert Spectrum. Thus, the invention can localize any event on the time as well as the frequency axis. The decomposition can also be viewed as an expansion of the data in terms of the IMF's. Then, these IMF's, based on and derived from the data, can serve as the basis of that expansion.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2001Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Norden E. Patent number: 6735348Abstract: A method for photogrammetric block adjustment of satellite imagery using a simplified adjustment model in-lieu of a physical camera model. A known relationship between image space line and sample coordinate and object space X, Y, Z coordinates is provided by a mathematical model. Observations comprise ground control points, tie points, or other observations for which approximate knowledge of object and image space coordinates is available. The photogrammetric block adjustment determines the parameters of the adjustment model to best fit the observations and measurements. Object coordinates can be calculated for features measured in the images after block adjustment. In one embodiment the method is utilized for photogrammetric block adjustment of satellite imagery described by a rational polynomial (RPC) camera model rather than by a physical camera model.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2001Date of Patent: May 11, 2004Assignee: Space Imaging, LLCInventors: Oliver Eugene Dial, Jr., Jacek Franciszek Grodecki

Satellite commanding using remotely controlled modulation of satellite on-board telemetry parameters
Patent number: 6735501Abstract: A satellite command system and method that provides satellite commanding using remotely-controlled modulation of telemetry parameters on-board a satellite. Software is provided on each of the redundant processor units that creates separate DMA command input pathways to the redundant processor units. A command translator is used at a ground station to translate a command that is to be implemented on the satellite into a form ready for modulation. The command information is uplinked to the satellite by remotely manipulating (modulating) a quantity that can be measured by the on-board computer using its telemetry collection functions. The software implemented in processor units recognizes the modulation and processes it to reconstruct the command. The reconstructed command is passed to the processor unit, which then executes the command.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2000Date of Patent: May 11, 2004Assignee: Space Systems/Loral, IncInventors: Aaron J.
