    Abstract: A spine stabilization prosthesis which supports the spine while providing for the preservation of spinal motion. The spine stabilization prosthesis incorporates a bone anchor having a deflectable post and a compound spinal rod which provide for load sharing while preserving range of motion and reducing stress exerted upon the bone anchors and spinal anatomy. The bone anchor includes a deflectable post connected by a ball-joint to a bone screw. The compound spinal rod includes a coupling mounted to the deflectable post and connected by a pivoting joint to a rod. The combined motions of the ball-joint and the pivoting joint support a range of motion of adjacent vertebrae which closely approximates the natural range of motion of the spine.

Compound spinal rods are used to span from one vertebra to an adjacent vertebra. Compound spinal rods include a first rod connected by a linkage to a second rod. The linkage allows for movement of the first rod relative to the second rod. The movement permitted by the compound spinal rod is designed to enhance the ability of a dynamic stabilization prosthesis to more closely approximate the natural kinematics of the spine without impairing stabilization of the spine.

    Abstract: A method for strengthening a spinous process comprises positioning a framework over an outer surface of the spinous process, the framework comprising a mesh connected to a frame. Bone filler is distributed over the mesh so that the bone filler contacts the mesh and contacts the spinous process. The bone filler is allowed to cure. A jig is positioned at the spinous process so that a slot through the jig is exposed to a side of the spinous process. A cannula is oriented so that the cannula is receivable in the slot, and insertable into the spinous process through the slot. Bone filler is injected into the spinous process by way of the cannula, with the injection terminating when a desired amount of bone filler has been injected into the spinous process. The cannula is then removed and the bone filler allowed to cure within the vertebra. The above steps can also be accomplished simultaneously or in any order.
