Abstract: A system, for example an electronic blasting system, in which a command is issued by a master device to all slave devices connected to the system, causing all slave devices that have not been identified to the master device to respond with identifying information and optionally other information pertaining to the slave device.
Abstract: A pyrotechnic initiator having an internal sleeve that facilitates the loading and durable retention of a pyrotechnic charge in place on the header surface within the initiator. The sleeve beneficially retains the charge either in conjunction with the upper interior surface of the charge can, or through the use of a monolithic charge and a narrowed top end of the sleeve.

Abstract: Dynamic baselining of current modulation-based talkback from a slave device to a master device in a system such as an electronic blasting system, wherein the dynamic baselining enhances communication integrity under conditions of environmental noise and the like. With a data packet of appreciable length, the dynamic baselining is preferably performed repeatedly on the bytes or words within the packet.
Abstract: Current modulation-based talkback in a system in which the background noise in the level of current draw is minimized such that the talkback is effected with a desirably high signal-to-noise ratio, such as by the master device holding the system voltage low such that the slave devices will not be performing tasks that would cause the current draw on the system to have an undesirable level of background noise, or, in an electronic blasting system, by preventing all other detonators from performing tasks that would create an undesirable background current draw when a particular detonator is talking back.
Abstract: Gas generating compositions having a fuel preferably comprising a mixture of 5-aminotetrazole (5-AT), azodicarbonamide (ADCA), an oxidizer, and a superfine metal powder burn rate enhancer such as nano-aluminum, for use in automotive seatbelt pretensioners and other suitable applications requiring high impetus, high rate of gas generation. Also, methods of making these compositions, and devices incorporating them such as seatbelt pretensioners.

Abstract: A pyrotechnic initiator having an initiator including a relatively low monolithic ignition charge that is separated from an overlying output charge by an intermediary slip plane. The slip plane may simply be a non-integral junction between monolithic ignition and output charges, or it may be a junction between a monolithic ignition charge and a non-monolithic output charge, or it may be a void or barrier between the ignition and output charges.

Abstract: Regulated charging of an energy storage module in a pyrotechnic device such as a firing capacitor in an electronic detonator, preferably in the form of constant-current charging limited at a “rail voltage,” and optionally limited to a sufficiently low current to provide additional benefits to the pyrotechnic device such as in the case of a short-circuit.

Abstract: An electronic blasting system in which the electronic detonator, when attached to a blasting machine or logger, automatically senses and determines whether it is attached to a blasting machine or a logger, preferably by utilizing a different operating voltage for the blasting machine versus that of the logger, with the detonator being capable of distinguishing the respective operating voltages.

Abstract: A pyrotechnic initiator having a bridgewire configured in an enhanced heat-sinking relationship with the adjacent ignition charge and/or header glass surface without the necessity of a consolidation force.
Abstract: A multi-unit pyrotechnic initiation system includes two or more pyrotechnic initiators molded in place into a base. Each initiator preferably includes a body overmolded around an igniter. The retainers of two or more pyrotechnic initiators may be formed together as part of a unitary substructure.
Abstract: An initiator with a body having integral features for orienting and holding a shunt, and having integral features for orienting a mating electrical connector.
Abstract: A pyrotechnic initiator has a molded connector with a hollow interior, where the connector includes at least one locking tab extending from the connector wall toward the centerline of the connector, overhanging the hollow interior of the connector. A mating connector can be inserted past the locking tab for a mounting connection and pulled out past the locking tab for disconnecting the pyrotechnic initiator. The molded connector feature preferably is injection molded around a molding assembly which is used to form at least one locking tab. Cavities corresponding to the location of the locking tabs are provided by the intersection of separate pieces of the molding assembly.
Abstract: Disclosed is a pyrotechnic initiator header having a center pin with a circumferential notch retention feature that enhances secure and effective disposition of an ignition pyrotechnic charge droplet to the header in the area of the bridgewire.

Abstract: A pyrotechnic initiator adapted for insertion into a sealed gas unit includes an igniter over which a nonconductive body is molded. The nonconductive body resists the pressure inside a sealed gas unit and protects the igniter from that pressure. The body provides substantially all of the structural support for the igniter. The body is molded onto a retainer, onto which a cup is attached to form a pressure seal and a hermetic seal against the gases within the sealed gas unit. Because the body carries substantially all of the structural loads exerted by the gas within the sealed gas unit, the cup can be made substantially thinner than previously possible.
