  • Patent number: 5615379
Abstract: A software tool enables a software developer to quickly access, report and modify data. This tool allows the user to open a file, and read, write, update and delete records in that file. The user is also able to search for a string of as many as thirty ASCII characters, as well as to perform the search in hex, decimal or binary. A user can change occurrences of one string to another string. The contents of a file can easily be displayed and printed in either ASCII, hex, decimal or binary. One can also alter the contents of a file in ASCII, hex, decimal or binary. Particular records with a file or entire files can be easily encrypted or decrypted. One can easily load, alter and invoke frequently used commands, function keys and macros. Creating and executing files containing multiple commands of the editor of the present invention is facilitated. In addition, the user can access DDL dictionary files to create reports and to locate files.

  • Patent number: 5493564
Abstract: A method and apparatus for global routing of electronic messages includes maintaining external and internal address information for each user of a messaging system, along with means for associating the external and internal address for any given user. Upon receipt of a signal embodying a message, the messaging system accesses a conversion table to translate the external address for the recipient to its associated internal address. Similarly, for messages being sent to outside recipients, the messaging system accesses a conversion table to translate the internal address for the originator of the message to an associated external address. For messages sent between users of the same system where the originator specifies an external address for the intended recipient, a dual translation may be performed to convert the internal originator address to an external address and the external recipient address to an internal address.

  • Patent number: 5420857
Abstract: A packet switch with a plurality of processing modules (PMs) interconnected via a shared transmission medium is provided with a flat distributed architecture by which each of the PMs has the capability of exclusive control of establishing a path for a user connection through the switch when a call request (CR) packet is received at one of the input transmission lines to the respective PM of the switch, and in which the exclusive control is exercised to select the best available line among all of the output transmission lines from the switch whether that output transmission line is one of its own or one of those of another PM in the switch, so that the path for the user call connection through the switch established in response to a given CR packet at any given time is a single hop via the shared transmission medium between the source PM which established the path and the destination PM which has the selected output transmission line, except where a single PM is both the source and the destination PM because i

  • Patent number: 5282202
Abstract: Method and apparatus for information communication during call connections between subscribers adapted to transmit and receive multimedia information at a pair of endpoint nodes of a fast packet switched network, the endpoint nodes being connected by a network path including at least one transit node traversed by links of the path. The multimedia information is conveyed as traffic consisting of a plurality of component types from among voice, video and data traffic component types each associated with a different subscriber at one of the endpoint nodes. A succession of composite frames conveying information is launched from each of the endpoint nodes to the other of the pair on the network path, with each of the frames configured to contain a plurality of fixed size channels representing bandwidth allocations for each of the traffic component types.

  • Patent number: 5282207
Abstract: Information is transmitted between a multiplicity of subscribers as components of traffic in an integrated services network, (ISN), in which the information traffic consists of a multiplicity of media types according to the different subscribers including voice, video, and data traffic component types. The traffic component types in the form of portions of respective information streams to be transmitted from subscribers at an entry point of the ISN are assembled into the payload of each of a sequence of composite frames for transmission through the ISN. The traffic component types subjected to such assembly are limited to those destined for subscribers at the same exit point of the ISN. Traffic component types within the composite frame payload are grouped in sets of adjacent channels of fixed bandwidth so that each group is limited to channels containing traffic components of the same type, with each channel assigned in its entirety to a selected subscriber.

  • Patent number: 5251209
Abstract: A system and method of transmitting information between a multiplicity of subscribers as components of traffic in an integrated services network (ISN). The information traffic consists of a multiplicity of media types associated with respective ones of the different subscribers including voice, video and data traffic component types. Each traffic component type has attributes relevant to transmission through the ISN which may differ from such attributes of the other traffic component types, such as delay sensitivity, loss tolerance, activity level, burst size, average packet length, and probability of buffer overflow. A plurality of the traffic component types to be transmitted, limited to those destined for subscribers at the same exit point of the ISN, is assembled from subscribers at an entry point of the ISN into a single composite frame of variable size for transmission along a path through the ISN.

  • Patent number: 5216591
Abstract: A method for selecting the most cost-efficient locations for backbone nodes in a distributed data network is disclosed. The method iteratively evaluates candidate backbone node locations, adding in each iteration the candidate whose addition to the network would create the greatest savings in total network cost. After all candidates which produce savings are added to the network, the method iteratively evaluates the backbone node locations and removes those whose removal would create cost savings. Data terminals are reassigned among the backbone nodes in the least cost manner. The method also estimates total network cost based on the resulting network configuration.

  • Patent number: 5170394
Abstract: A packet switched network has a system for providing an end-to-end connection for a communication or data transfer session between a host processor and a transparent connection device, which may be an unattended device, both utilizing a 3270 protocol. A terminal PAD is responsive to positive dataset signals on the associated line for the device indicating desire to establish communication by the device, irrespective of the absence of polling of the device by the host or by the terminal PAD, to transmit a call request packet through the network to a host PAD operatively associated with the host. The host PAD is responsive to the call request subsequent to a poll from the host to transmit call accept and circuit enable packets through the network to the terminal PAD. The latter then commences polling of the device to evoke information and data messages from the device for end-to-end communication with the host in the data transfer state.

  • Patent number: 5113499
Abstract: A security access management system for a packet switched data communications network has access management apparatus operatively associated with the packet switches at each entry point of the network. The access management apparatus includes an administrative host processor for examining user terminal authorization information in packets received at the associated packet switch for transmission through the network to destination addresses for the packets. A database associated with the administrative host stores information including levels of authorization of the user terminals for the respective entry point of the network for access to specified destinations, as pre-assigned by the network customer.

  • Patent number: 5077782
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing troubleshooting capability in a four wire telephone line employing a V.32-type or other unbalanced modem in a local communication link at one or both ends of the telephone line for a data network. Each modem has its own transmitter and receiver. An activatable but normally inhibited analog loopback is installed externally of the modem within the local link with which the modem is associated, with no loopback connection between the transmitter and the receiver within the modem itself. The external loopback is activated while the modem is induced to transmit a call connection signal, so that by virtue of the external loopback the signal is fed back to the receiver of the same modem to permit testing of the operativeness of the modem and the related portion of the link. The external loopback may be activated from terminal equipment on the local link with which the modem is associated, or may be activated from a point of the network remote from the local link.

  • Patent number: 4979100
Abstract: A packet switch receives data and processes it for assembly into packages. A bus allows communication between each of the data processing units of the switch and one or more storage units for storing the data packets. Arbitration for deciding which of the processing units will be granted access to the bus is performed by a system which selectively and alterably designates any of at least two different levels of priority of access to the bus for each of the processing units, and the relative percentages of time of access for the different priorty levels. The system assures greater access to the bus by those of the processing units having the higher level of priority. If communication is provided by two buses, the requests for access are alternated between them.
