Patents Assigned to Sprint Spectrum L.P.
  • Patent number: 9473995
Abstract: As a communication device receives packet data via a first access network, the communication detects that packet data arriving via a second access network is duplicative of the packet data that the communication device is receiving via the first access network. In response to detecting such duplication, the communication device discontinues being served by the first access network and continues with communication via the second access network.

  • Patent number: 9473286
Abstract: A method and corresponding system to help manage carrier-aggregation service in view of possible intermodulation distortion between component carriers. When a base station is serving a UE with carrier aggregation service on at least two component carriers, the base station determines that uplink communication on the two component carriers is likely to combine to produce an intermodulation product that falls within the downlink channel of one of the component carriers, and that the power level of that intermodulation product is likely to be threshold high. In response, the base station then modifies the set of component carriers on which the base station provides the UE with carrier aggregation service, to help reduce or avoid associated intermodulation distortion.

  • Patent number: 9473976
Abstract: When a UE engages in application-layer session setup signaling with a session server via a radio access network and gateway, the UE conveys in its session setup signaling an indication of the UE's observed air interface quality (e.g., received signal strength or signal to noise ratio) and perhaps an indication of a characteristic of an neighboring air interface (e.g., a duplex configuration or band of the neighboring air interface). The session server then reports the UE's indicated air interface quality and perhaps neighboring air interface characteristic to a policy server, and the policy server uses that information as a basis to select a quality of service level for a bearer to be established between the UE and the gateway for carrying media content of the session. The policy server then invokes establishment of a bearer having the selected quality of service level.

  • Patent number: 9473973
Abstract: It may be determined that a HARQ transmission schedule from a RAN to a WCD includes HARQ acknowledgment bundling. An indication of signal quality as measured by the WCD may be received by the RAN. The indicated signal quality may be associated with a first transmission rate. The RAN may determine a first set of one or more data slots of the HARQ transmission schedule for which the WCD bundles HARQ acknowledgments. In response to this determination, one or more HARQ subpackets may be transmitted to the WCD in the first set of one or more data slots. The one or more HARQ subpackets may be transmitted at a second transmission rate that is less than the first transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 9474054
Abstract: A method and apparatus to help manage allocation of resources in a wireless communication system. A base station dynamically decides based on a type of bearer communication in which a user equipment device (UE) is engaged whether the base station will apply a buffer status report (BSR) process or a non-BSR process. In the BSR process, the base station responds to a scheduling request from the UE by allocating uplink resources for the UE to transmit a BSR to the base station, and the base station then receives the BSR and uses it as a basis to then allocate uplink resources for the UE to transmit bearer data to the base station. In a non-BSR process, the base station forgoes receipt and use of a BSR and instead responds to the scheduling request by allocating uplink resources for the UE to transmit bearer data to the base station.

  • Patent number: 9467938
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for using DRCLocks for conducting call admission control. In an embodiment, an access node provides service to a plurality of access terminals on a carrier in a coverage area, where the plurality of access terminals does not include a first access terminal. The access node receives a request for new service on the carrier in the coverage area from the first access terminal over an air interface, and responsively determines whether an aggregate-DRCLock condition is met. If the aggregate-DRCLock condition is met, the access node denies the request for new service.

  • Patent number: 9468039
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station is able to communicate with a first system using a first air interface protocol (e.g., EVDO) and with a second system using a second air interface protocol (e.g., 1×RTT CDMA). When the first system schedules a page message for transmission to the multi-mode mobile station, the first system may query the second system to determine whether the second air interface protocol is being used for a current call involving the multi-mode mobile station or is being used to attempt establishment of a requested call to the multi-mode mobile station. In the case of a current call, the first system may wait until the call is released before transmitting the page message. In the case of an attempt to establish a requested call, the first system may wait to determine whether the attempt is successful before transmitting the page message.

  • Patent number: 9462525
Abstract: When a UE has a first bearer with a gateway via a first base station and the UE engages in session setup signaling with a session server via that first bearer to set up a media session, the network may establish for the UE a second bearer via a second base station, and may the second bearer for communication of media content of the session while using the first bearer for communication control signaling for the session. In practice, the first base station could be a macro base station that operates on licensed frequency spectrum, while the second base station could be a small cell that operates on unlicensed frequency spectrum. The disclosed process can thereby help to offload communication of session content to be via the small cell instead of via the macro base station, while maintaining session control signaling to be via the macro base station.

  • Patent number: 9451554
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for allocating uplink air interface resources in a manner that allows particular user equipment devices (UEs) to apply less attenuation than may be specified more generally for UEs served by a base station of a wireless service provider. The base station may operate on a carrier band, serving UEs that are subscribers of the wireless service provider as well as UEs roaming in the base station's coverage area from another service provider. To avoid uplink transmission power leakage across the edges of the carrier band, the base station may broadcast a message to all the UEs notifying them to attenuate their respective transmission levels. The base station may allocate uplink air interface resources to subscribing UEs from a particular portion of the carrier band that allows them to transmit using less attenuation than roaming UEs and still avoid power leakage across the band edges.

  • Patent number: 9451003
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and system for triggering fast-content-switching with respect to streaming media such as RTSP streaming media for instance. When a server receives a DESCRIBE request or the like from a client that is engaged in an existing streaming media session, the server will determine if fast-content-switching is supported for switching from the existing session to the newly requested session. If so, the server will include in its reply to the DESCRIBE request a parameter (one or more pieces of data) that is interpretable by the client to mean that fast-content-switching is supported, so that the client will then request the server to start the new session without the client first engaging in SETUP transactions with respect to each media stream of the new session. This process can decrease latency in switching between sessions, by reducing the likelihood that a requested fast-content-switch will fail.

  • Patent number: 9445332
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improved idle handoff a mobile station in a wireless communication system. While idling in a particular sector of the system, the mobile station will select a target sector based on a determination that the target sector has the same number of channels as the current sector, such as the same number of paging channels and perhaps the same number of frequency channels as the current sector. The mobile station will then engage in an idle handoff from the current sector to the selected target sector. By striving to hand off to a sector that has the same number of channels, particularly the same number of paging channels, the mobile station may avoid having to hash onto a channel in the target sector and may thereby minimize the likelihood of missing a page message sent while the mobile station was busy hashing onto the channel.

  • Patent number: 9444570
Abstract: Reference signals (a.k.a., pilot signals) are broadcast to aid in at least channel estimation, cell selection, and handover. When a multi-antenna mode (i.e., MIMO) is used data signals on one antenna should not interfere with reference signals on another antenna. Reference signal resource elements (a.k.a., slots) being broadcast from one antenna are multiplied by a first Walsh code and the data (or reference) signal resource elements being broadcast from another antenna are multiplied by second Walsh code in the same family. Multiplication by Walsh codes reduces or eliminates the correlation between the data resource elements on a first antenna and the reference signal resource elements simultaneously broadcast on a second antenna.

  • Patent number: 9445344
Abstract: It may be determined that a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission schedule from a radio access network (RAN) to wireless communication devices (WCDs) uses HARQ acknowledgment bundling for a first set of two or more data slots, and that the HARQ transmission schedule does not use HARQ acknowledgment bundling for a second set of one or more data slots. It may further be determined that a first WCD supports carrier aggregation when receiving communications from the RAN, and that a second WCD does not support carrier aggregation when receiving communications from the RAN. Based on the first WCD supporting carrier aggregation, the RAN may transmit a first data to the first WCD in the first set of data slots. Based on the second WCD not supporting carrier aggregation, the RAN may transmit a second data to the second WCD in the second set of data slots.

  • Patent number: 9445256
Abstract: A first home packet gateway (PGW) device may receive a binding update message on behalf of a wireless communication device (WCD). The first home PGW device may be associated with a first pool of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and the WCD may be assigned a particular IP address. It may be determined that the first pool of IP addresses does not include the particular IP address, and that the particular IP address is included in a second pool of IP addresses that is associated with a second home PGW device. Possibly in response to determining that the particular IP address is included in the second pool of IP addresses that is associated with the second home PGW device, the first home PGW device may forward the binding update message to the second home PGW device.
