  • Patent number: 8509821
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method that enables a radio access network (RAN) to page more mobile stations concurrently. By reducing the size of the individual page record, more page records can fit within a general page message (GPM), and thus more mobile stations can receive page messages. One method of reducing the size of an individual page record is to reduce the size of the terminal IDs that page records carry. Currently, terminal IDs are globally unique, but they can be shortened if replaced with locally unique IDs. These locally unique IDs are unique for only mobile stations in a given paging area, unique for only mobile stations assigned to a given paging channel time slot, and/or unique for only mobile stations in a subgroup of mobile stations assigned to a given paging channel time slot. The number of mobile stations in any of these groups is smaller than the number of mobile stations in the global network.

  • Patent number: 8509145
Abstract: A first serving system controls a first group of sectors that transmit pilot signals having pseudonoise (PN) offsets corresponding to a first PN increment, and a second serving system controls a second group of sectors that transmit pilot signals having PN offsets corresponding to a second PN increment. The first serving system serves a mobile station via a sector in the first group and determines that the mobile station is likely to be in a communication range of at least one sector in the second group. In response, the first serving system instructs the mobile station to use the second PN increment when scanning for pilot signals. Thereafter, the mobile station may use the first PN increment to scan for pilot signals to add to its remaining set and, if the remaining set is not large enough, may then use the second PN increment to scan for additional pilot signals.

  • Patent number: 8509814
Abstract: A method and system for integrating location based services into retail applications. Correlation-data and request-trigger logic are stored in data storage of a portable device. The correlation-data defines geographic locations and corresponding network addresses. The portable device determines its geographic location (i.e. by using a GPS receiver device). In response to determining its location, the portable device uses the request-trigger logic to determine if its present location is within a geographic area defined in the correlation-data. When the request-trigger logic finds that the location is within a defined area, the portable device responsively sends an information-request to a network address pre-correlated with the given location. In response to the information-request, the portable device receives merchant-information (i.e. coupons, special offers, etc.) from a merchant-server. The portable device displays the merchant information for viewing by a user.

  • Patent number: 8503297
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for adaptive rate control based on battery life. An access terminal in a wireless communication system that includes a base station will operate in a first state in which, at least, the access terminal responds to receiving reverse-noise messages from the base station by making adjustments to a data transmission rate on a reverse-link traffic channel to the base station in accordance with the received reverse-noise messages. Upon receiving a first threshold number of reverse-noise messages from the base station indicating that the reverse-link noise measured by the base station is alternating above and below the threshold level, and in response having a battery power level below a threshold power level, the access terminal will transition to operating in a second state in which, at least, the access terminal does not make the adjustments to the data transmission rate on the reverse-link traffic channel in response to receiving reverse-noise messages from the base station.

  • Patent number: 8487762
Abstract: A server may detect a threshold number of mobile stations (e.g., total mobile stations or mobile stations belonging to a predefined group) currently located at an area, such as by determining that a number of mobile stations currently located at an area is greater than a desired maximum number of mobile stations or less than a desired minimum number of mobile stations. The threshold number may be determined based on a typical number of mobile stations located at the area. In response to detecting the threshold number of mobile stations, the server may obtain data recorded by surveillance equipment located at the area (including data recorded by mobile stations temporarily acting as surveillance equipment,) which data represents activity at the area. To obtain the data, the server may instruct the surveillance equipment to begin recording data. The server may then output the received data for receipt by a user.

  • Patent number: 8483726
Abstract: Disclosed are methods for determining which page attempt to shed. In accordance with these methods, when a page attempt from a first sequence directed to a first access terminal (AT) contends with a page attempt from a second sequence directed to a second AT for transmission over the air interface of a RAN, the RAN determines which sequence has been shed to a greater extent. The RAN then transmits the page attempt from the sequence that has been shed to a greater extent and sheds the page attempt from the sequence that has been shed to a lesser extent. The methods advantageously help to avoid one sequence of page attempts being disproportionately shed.

  • Patent number: 8479269
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for reducing a number of unauthorized wireless communication devices (WCDs) using a femtocell. A femtocell may transmit a pilot beacon on a macro-network carrier, and may transmit one or more overhead channels on a femtocell carrier. Subsequently, the femtocell may receive a registration request from a WCD. The femtocell may then determine whether the WCD is authorized to receive wireless services from the femtocell, and if it is not so authorized, the femtocell may, during a subsequent slot associated with the unauthorized WCD in a periodically recurring slot cycle, responsively disable at least one of (i) its pilot channel and (ii) one or more of its overhead channels. As a result of the disabling, the unauthorized WCD may move away from the femtocell, perhaps handing off to the macro network.

  • Patent number: 8477686
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and system to help manage transmission power for wireless communications. A radio access network (RAN) will artificially increase target frame error rate (FER) for certain mobile stations in a coverage area for just a portion of a defined call drop timer period, and the RAN will automatically revert to apply a baseline target FER for a duration sufficient to allow recovery of the mobile station's communications before expiration of the call drop timer period. By increasing the target FER for the mobile stations, noise on the air interface can be reduced. And by reverting the target FER to its baseline level for a sufficient duration, call drops resulting from the increased target FER can be avoided.
