  • Patent number: 8259606
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for improving reverse-link performance by using differentiated reverse activity bits (RABs) based on mobile-station revision. In an embodiment, an access node provides wireless service to first and second mutually exclusive sets of access terminals, the first operating according to IS-856, Release 0, the second according to IS-856, Revision A. The access node maintains first and second RAB thresholds, and periodically (a) measures reverse noise rise (RNR), (b) compares the RNR to the first and second thresholds, (c) transmits a first RAB to the first set of access terminals, and (d) transmits a second RAB to the second set of access terminals. The first RAB is set when the measured RNR exceeds the first threshold, and clear when it does not. The second RAB is set when the measured RNR exceeds the second RAB threshold, and clear when it does not.

  • Patent number: 8260313
Abstract: An apparatus may comprise a location-aware application, a first location detector, and a data storage device. The storage device may contain service-access-point (SAP) data that identifies a first SAP through which the apparatus may access a second location detector. The first detector may obtain data from the second detector via the first SAP and use the obtained data to determine a location of the apparatus. This determined location may be provided to the location-aware application. The data storage may include program instructions for modifying the SAP data such that the SAP data identifies a second SAP through which the apparatus may access a third location detector. The first detector may obtain data from the third detector via the second SAP and then use the obtained data to determine a location of the apparatus. This determined location may be provided to another location-aware application that is executable at the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8254967
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus to manage selection of a paging channel in a wireless communication system. When a mobile station powers on in a coverage area having multiple paging channels, the mobile station may apply a hashing algorithm keyed to the mobile station's identifier, to select a paging channel on which to idle. On the other hand, when the mobile station moves from a coverage area having a number of paging channels into a neighboring coverage area having a different number of paging channels, the mobile station may by rote idle on a default paging channel in the neighboring coverage area. In this way, the mobile station can help to avoid an access handoff failure that may arise from the mobile station being busy hashing onto a paging channel when the network transmits an access response message to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 8254930
Abstract: Methods and systems for a wireless communication device (WCD) to change a media session codec prior to handoff to a new wireless coverage area are presented. In particular, a WCD is served by a first wireless coverage area of a RAN, and is conducting a media session using a first codec. The WCD detects that it is about to be handed off to a second wireless coverage area, and transmits a request to a server to determine the capacity available to the WCD via the second wireless coverage area. If this capacity is less than the capacity request by the first codec, the WCD proactively renegotiates the media session to use a second codec that requires less capacity. The server may take various factors into account when responding to the WCD's query, including the sector loading of the second wireless coverage area, available capacity at a backhaul link between the RAN and a network, and/or a profile of the WCD.

  • Patent number: 8254331
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and device for managing handoff of an access terminal in a radio access network (RAN). An access terminal may detect a handoff trigger, determine whether there is an ongoing data transfer in progress, determine an amount remaining in the data transfer, compare the amount remaining to a threshold amount, and delay or cancel the handoff if the amount remaining is below the threshold amount. Additionally, the access terminal may consider signal strength of the current (source) coverage area in determining whether to delay or cancel the handoff.

  • Patent number: 8254330
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for expediting call setup in a wireless communication system. A mobile station operating in idle mode and under coverage of a first and second wireless coverage area receives overhead channel data for the first coverage area. The mobile station then detects a trigger to initiate connectivity with the wireless communication system. Responsive to detecting this trigger, the mobile station determines an amount of time until it will receive overhead channel data for the second coverage area and makes a determination of whether this determined amount of time is greater than a threshold. If the determined amount of time is greater than a threshold, the mobile station seeks connectivity via the first coverage area. However, if the determined amount of time is less than a threshold, the mobile station seeks connectivity via the second coverage area.

  • Patent number: 8254874
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for variable persistence delay in access terminals receiving a concatenate page message. When an access terminal (e.g., a mobile station or wireless communication device) receives a page message that it determines is part of a concatenated page message, the access terminal will compute a backoff delay and a persistence delay according to delay parameters selected based upon the determination. According to an example embodiment, the access terminal will use the place-order of the received page record in the concatenation of page records in the page message to select values of the delay parameters. Other access terminals receiving the same concatenated page message will similarly select delay parameters. By associating the delay parameter values with place-order in the concatenated page message, each access terminal may used different values, and thereby compute different delays.

  • Patent number: 8254897
Abstract: A method and system for conferencing a landline telephone into a cellular telephone call is disclosed. In response to a landline telephone going off-hook, a cellular telephone corresponding to the landline telephone is identified. When a determination is made that the corresponding cellular telephone is currently engaged in a call, the landline telephone is conferenced into the cellular call. If the cellular telephone is subsequently disengaged from the call, the original cellular call has been effectively transferred to the landline telephone. The inventive method and system may be linked to a cellular-landline conference call service. For example, a user may subscribe to such a service so that the user may automatically transfer a call from the user's cellular telephone to the user's home or office landline telephone when that landline telephone is taken off-hook.

  • Patent number: 8254989
Abstract: A method for using an account balance to limit application of cellular-PBX integration service. A cellular wireless communication device (WCD) will be allotted a quantity of cellular-PBX integration service, such as a number of minutes of use per month for instance. The quantity will be decremented a the WCD uses the service, and the WCD may be precluded from benefiting from the cellular-PBX integration service upon exhaustion of the balance. In one embodiment, for instance, when a radio access network (RAN) that serves the WCD receives a call request for the WCD, the account balance can be used as a basis to decide whether to pass the call to an IP PBX server that serves the WCD or whether to have the RAN handle the call.

  • Patent number: 8249625
Abstract: A method and system for routing position-determining requests to position-determining platforms. The method includes receiving into a position-determining system a position-determining request specifying a given processing-duration within a given range. The processing-duration defines a maximum amount of time that the system should spend determining position and thereby defines a corresponding granularity of position-determination by the system. All processing-durations in the given range, although different from each other, define the same corresponding granularity of position-determination by the system. The method further includes the system selecting, based on which processing-duration of the range the given processing-duration is, a position-determining platform of the plurality to process the received position-determining request. The method then includes routing the received position-determining request to the selected position-determining platform for processing.

  • Patent number: 8249598
Abstract: A method is disclosed for disambiguating a reported pilot signal so as to facilitate handoff of a mobile station. When a radio access network (RAN) receives from a mobile station a handoff request carrying a parameter that ambiguously identifies at least two sectors as the potential handoff target, the RAN will send a test probe on at least one of the potential handoff target sectors and will determine, based on mobile station response to the test probe, which sector the mobile station received the test probe on and thus which sector was the intended handoff target. The RAN may then direct the mobile station to hand off to that sector if appropriate. Further, the RAN may add the identified sector into a neighbor list of a similarly situated other mobile station, to allow the other mobile station to more efficiently hand off to the same sector if appropriate.

  • Patent number: 8249498
Abstract: A method to selectively restrict certain wireless communication devices (WCDs) from attempting to access a radio access network is disclosed. In example operation, a wireless carrier will provision a proper subset of its subscriber WCDs with a special access-toggle flag or associated logic, while other subscriber WCDs of the wireless carrier will not be so provisioned. When and where the wireless carrier wishes to prevent the subset of WCDs from attempting to access the wireless carrier's system, the wireless carrier will then broadcast an access-off command that will be interpreted by the devices with the access-toggle flag/logic as meaning that they should not seek to access the wireless carrier's system, but that will be disregarded (or at least not so interpreted) by the subscriber WCDs without the access-toggle flag/logic.
