  • Patent number: 7659850
Abstract: A base station almanac (BSA) stores directional forward link calibration (FLC) values that correct for differences between the listed locations of base station antennas and the actual locations of the antennas. Each directional FLC value is specific to wireless signals that are transmitted from a particular base station antenna and propagate toward a particular receiving area. A mobile station operating in a receiving area measures a wireless signal from a base station antenna located outside of the receiving area to obtain a signal measurement. The location of the mobile station is determined by applying a positioning algorithm that uses the signal measurement corrected by the directional FLC value for that particular combination of base station antenna and receiving area.

  • Publication number: 20090327443
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed that support the aggregation of acknowledgement messages and control messages. Advantageously, acknowledgement and negative acknowledgement indications for multiple client nodes are combined into a single aggregated message which is broadcast or multicast to the multiple client nodes. Based on unique identifiers assigned to each client node, client nodes are grouped such that the aggregated acknowledgement messages can be efficiently encoded to conserve both network capacity when they are transmitted, as well as processing capacity when they are parsed by the client nodes. If code division multiple access (CDMA) technology is used, the aggregated acknowledgment message can be transmitted without CDMA spreading to effectively broadcast or multicast it to multiple client nodes. A similar technique can be employed for the efficient broadcast or multicast of aggregated control messages.

  • Publication number: 20090325594
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for using base-station location to assist mobile-device system acquisition. A mobile station, which stores a network identifier, selects a carrier frequency. The mobile station receives, from a base station on a first carrier frequency, geographic coordinates of the base station and a base-station network identifier, and determines whether the base-station network identifier matches the mobile-station network identifier. If the base-station network identifier matches the mobile-station network identifier, the mobile station will scan the indicated home frequency bands and will connect to one of the home frequencies, and if the base-station network identifier does not match the mobile-station network identifier, the geographic coordinates of the base station are used to identify a market area and a most-preferred carrier frequency is selected from the identified market area.

  • Patent number: 7636327
Abstract: A method and system for managing communications in a packet-based real-time media conference. A conference server determines whether a given conference session should operate in half-duplex mode or in full-duplex mode, and the server instructs at least one participating station accordingly. In the half-duplex mode of operation, for instance, a station may engage in an implicit floor control process, in which the station treats an incoming media stream as an implicit floor denial. On the other hand, in the full-duplex mode of operation, a station would not treat an incoming stream as an implicit floor denial.

  • Patent number: 7634250
Abstract: A signal conditioner (SC) and method for performing communications via a shared transport medium between a base transceiver station (BTS) and a remote antenna entity (RAE). A first SC is connected to the BTS and a second SC is connected to the RAE. Each SC interfaces to the transport medium. The first SC receives an RF signal representing a combined digital signal (CDS) from the BTS. The first SC recovers and conditions the CDS, and then transmits the conditioned CDS to the second SC via the transport medium. The second SC receives the conditioned CDS, recovers the CDS, produces an RF signal representing the CDS, and transmits this RF signal to the RAE. The RAE sends this RF signal to an antenna of the RAE for transmission of this RF signal via the antenna. First SC and second SC also facilitate communication of a CDS from RAE to BTS.

  • Patent number: 7633915
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for use of positioning information to determine whether to trigger a packet-data-network re-registration when detecting multiple radio signals of sufficient strength. A mobile node registers with a first mobility agent, wherein the mobile node communicates with the first mobility agent via a first radio transceiver. The mobile node determines that a first signal strength of a first radio signal from the first radio transceiver and a second signal strength of a second radio signal from a second radio transceiver are each greater than a first threshold and that the second signal strength is greater than the first signal strength, and responsively determines whether or not it is traveling. If the mobile node determines that it is traveling, the mobile node registers with a second mobility agent, wherein the mobile node communicates with the second mobility agent via the second radio transceiver.

  • Patent number: 7623888
Abstract: A method and apparatus for ranked presentation of user-interface display elements is disclosed. A device will hold data that indicates a priority order for selecting user-interface display elements, such as buttons, labels, etc., to present. When a user-interface skin is loaded onto the device and the skin has a limited number of slots (i.e., segments, spaces, places, etc.) for presenting user-interface display elements, the priority order will be used as a basis to select which elements to present in the available slots. For example, if the skin has only five slots for presentation of user-interface display elements, just the top five elements in the priority list will be presented. Those top five elements can then be presented in any order, such as in priority order, alphabetical order, or randomly.

  • Patent number: 7620008
Abstract: A method and system to allow wireless devices, such as wirelessly-equipped digital cameras, to gain wireless packet-data connectivity and to interact with a media management server, such as a photo server. A wireless carrier distributes multiple devices all having the same set of radio access data (e.g., mobile identification number and electronic serial number), and all having shared or unique pre-registration data. Any such device can then readily use the shared radio access data to acquire radio connectivity and can then use the pre-registration data to gain access to the media management server. The first time such a device connects with the media management server using the pre-registration data, the server will engage in a online account registration session with the device and provision the device with post-registration data that the device can thereafter use to access the online account.
