  • Patent number: 10296910
Abstract: A technique for providing a pay-by-name payment experience is disclosed. A point-of-sale (POS) system at a store receives information identifying an account with a central server from a payment card using a short-range wireless technology. In response to that, it obtains information regarding the account, including a person's name associated with the account, using the received information. It also accepts a name from a specific consumer in the vicinity. At this point, it determines whether the name accepted from the specific consumer and the name associated with the account are identical. If it determines that the two names are identical, it checks-in the consumer to the store.

  • Patent number: 10282552
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for protecting electronic devices from security breaches (e.g., in the form of DPA attacks) by managing input/output (I/O) pin states. The technique is particularly useful in financial applications in which data security related operations, such as those involving cryptography, are performed by payment card readers, and the power supplied to drive the operations are measured and analyzed by attackers to extract sensitive information. The technique prevents any external device from measuring the operation power by disabling the I/O pins. The I/O pins are set to a logic low at any given time a data security related operation is performed. As a result, no communication with the external environment is possible during the data security operation, and external power measurements by DPAs are prevented.

  • Patent number: 10268999
Abstract: In some examples, a merchant device at a point of sale (POS) location may present information to a merchant in a first language preferred by the merchant, and may present information to a buyer in a second language preferred by the buyer. The merchant device may switch between the different languages in response to detecting a change in the physical orientation of a display. For instance, in a first orientation in which the display is viewable from a merchant direction, the merchant device may present information in the language preferred by the merchant. When the orientation of the display is changed to a second orientation in which the display is viewable from a buyer direction, the merchant device may present information in the language indicated to be preferred by the buyer. Various techniques may be used for determining the preferred language of a particular buyer.
