Abstract: Optical-waveguide coils are used in rotation rate measuring instruments. To protect the optical-waveguide coil (1) from external influences, such as sound waves, pressure, and temperature changes, which may result in measurement errors, it is wound on a coil form (2) of soft elastomer under low tension. The coil unit so formed (1/2) is then placed in the annular groove (4) of a housing (3/5). Spacers at the coil form (2) position the coil unit (1/2) in the annular groove in such a way that the coil (1) is exactly in the middle of the annular groove (4). The remaining free space of the annular groove (4) is then filled with a sealing compound (6) in a vacuum. The sealing compound also spreads between the windings of the coil (1). It is preferably the same material as that from which the coil form (2) is made.

Abstract: A method of calibrating a flow cytometer is based on a set of highly uniform microbeads associated with a fluorescent dye in such a way that the microbeads have the same excitation and emission spectral properties as the samples which are to be measured. The calibration values of the microbeads are plotted against the relative fluorescence intensity peak channel for each microbead in the set. From this calibration plot, the relative fluorescence intensity peak channel of the sample is translated into equivalent soluble fluorescent dye molecules per sample particle. The calibration values of the standard microbeads are determined against solutions of the dyes.

Abstract: An identification method and identification kit are based upon making up groups of microsized particles normally invisible to the naked eye with each particle in each group being of a selected uniform size, shape and color. Coded identification is established by transferring a population of particles from a selected number of the groups to the item to be identified and then confirming such identification by examining the marked item under high magnification with a light microscope.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for synchronizing a clock to broadcast time-based signals, said time-based signals including encoded timing information, the method comprising the steps ofreceiving said time-based signals, decoding said time-based signals to derive a plurality of digits from said timing information representing actual clock time, andseparately verifying the correctness of each of said digits, said correctness verifying step including the steps of separately comparing each said derived digit with at least one corresponding previously decoded derived digit and verifying said derived digit when it meets a predefined verification test based on the consistency of said derived digit with said at least once corresponding previously decoded derived digit, repeating said comparison and verifying steps as said time-based signals are decoded until each said derived digit has been separately verified, and generating a lockon signal when all of said derived digits have been verified.

Abstract: A rectangular damper blade rotates about its longitudinal center line between an open and closed position to control the airflow entering an enclosure. Two longitudinal edges of the damper blade become positioned between two inlet edges of the enclosure as the blade rotates to the closed position. The blade is associated with two longitudinal seals. One seal is attached directly to one of the blade's longitudinal edges and provides wiping contact against one of the inlet edges. The other seal is attached to the other inlet edge and provides wiping contact against the blade's other longitudinal edge. Both seals have similar cross-sections to facilitate their interchangeability. And both seals include a flexible lip that extends upstream and perpendicular to the blade to enhance the sealing force and to minimize wiping friction.
Abstract: In an optical fibre submarine cable the ingress of hydrogen ions is reduced if not eliminated by at least one envelope which provides a barrier to hydrogen ions.In one embodiment a copper tape (L) is folded longitudinally around the cable core comprising strength member wires (G,H) split aluminium or coppr tube (E) and optical fibre package (A). The abutting edges (L') are seam welded with less than 0.1% skips. Preferably the folded copper tape is longitudinally welded while a loose fit and subsequently reduced in diameter to leave an accurately determined small annular gap between tubes E and F which is filled with a water blocking material that is highly viscose at ambient temperature and effectively glues the tubes together.

Abstract: An illustrative embodiment of the invention provides a peripheral flange generally perpendicular to the plane of the lavatory basin. The flange has a generally downwardly, inwardly sloping surface to enable the splash water to flow into the basin within the lavatory. As the flange sweeps around the periphery of the lavatory it develops into a massive spout support. The spout support enables the spout to direct water into the basin without causing the spout to extend across the basin surface. The support also has a protruding portion that establishes a reentrant basin surface in which the overflow drain is concealed from view when the lavatory is installed.

C., an ethane rich feedstock with a catalyst comprising a gallium modified molecular sieve catalyst, promoted with rhenium and a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, palladium, platinum, rhodium and iridium.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for purifying waste gases containing extremely finely dispersed pollutants in dust form and pollutants in gas and vapor form, particularly for purifying waste gases produced in chemical vapor phase reactions during the manufacture of optical waveguide preforms. In a first step, dust is extracted in a dry, coated fabric filter (1). The gaseous and vaporous pollutants are then absorbed in a gas scrubber. During this gas-scrubbing process, as soon as the absorption liquid circulating in an absorption-liquid circulation system reaches a pretermined pollutant concentration, part of the absorption liquid is withdrawn from the absorption-liquid circulation system and detoxicated in a separate detoxication circulation system. The part withdrawn is simultaneously replaced by fresh, unpolluted absorption liquid.
