Abstract: Disclosed are automatic dryer added fabric conditioning articles and methods utilizing fabric conditioning compositions comprising from about 20 percent to about 80 percent by weight of a mixture of quaternary ammonium compounds, and between about 80 percent to about 20 percent by weight of a mixture of glycerin and glyceryl esters, wherein the fabric conditioning compositions possess a melting point of about 30° C. to about 65° C. The conditioning compositions of the present invention are preferably employed in combination with a dispensing means adapted for use in an automatic clothes dryer. The fabric conditioning compositions may be coated onto substrates, and the fabric conditioning articles thereby obtained used to impart softness and anti-static properties to fabric. The method portion of the invention involves the commingling of damp fabrics with the fabric conditioning compositions in an automatic clothes dryer to impart softness and anti-static properties to the fabric.
Abstract: The present invention relates to emulsions comprising an emulsification system comprising a mixture of at least one cationic surfactant, at least one anionic surfactant, at least one “bridging surfactant”, an oil and water, along with methods for preparing such emulsions. More specifically, the invention relates to stable, synergistic emulsions of various oils, water, cationic, anionic, and bridging surfactants that are useful in preparing a variety of finished personal care, laundry, and cleaning products, including for examples creams, lotions, sunscreens, liquid dish detergents, laundry detergents, automatic dishwasher detergents, hand soaps, laundry bars, personal cleansing bars, multi-purpose cleaners, multi-functional shampoos, body washes, and textile treatment compositions. The emulsifications of the present invention also may be employed in agricultural and pesticide applications. Additionally, the surfactant blends may be utilized in antimicrobial formulations (e.g.

Abstract: The present invention relates to stable cold-mix water-in-oil emulsions and methods for preparing such emulsions. The cold-mix water-in-oil emulsions comprise oil (i.e., an emollient), water and an emulsification system comprising a quaternary ammonium-based low HLB emulsifier and optional co-emulsifiers. The emulsions are useful in preparing finished cosmetic compositions in the form of lotions, gels, or sprays, which provide improved moisturization, skin feel, skin care, and/or appearance benefits and/or reduced greasiness, with excellent rub-in and absorption characteristics. Also disclosed are cold-mix water-in-oil sunscreen emulsions and methods for preparing such sunscreen emulsions. The emulsions of the instant invention are generally capable of being substantially completely emulsified and stable at about 25° C.
Abstract: Water-in-oil emulsions are disclosed that comprise
(a) water;
(b) from about 10 to 65% by weight of an oil; and
(c) an emulsification system comprising a polysiloxane polyalkyl polyether copolymer and a phthalic anhydride derivative, substantially permanently maintaining the water and oil as an emulsion, the emulsification system and the emulsification system being substantially free from aluminum and zirconium salts, the emulsion being at a pH of from about 5 to 10.
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved method of making polymers. The method utilizes at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one polymerizable surface active agent. The polymerizable surface active agent is capable of co-polymerization with traditional monomers and/or polymerization with itself (i.e. homopolymerization) and is preferably substantially completely consumed during the course of the polymerization. Polymers produced by the method of the present invention are well suited for use in coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers and the like, as they form stable films, possess excellent adhesion properties and have improved hydrolytic stability characteristics. The present invention also encompasses homopolymeric surface active agents and their use in polymerization reactions.

Abstract: The present invention relates to surfactant compositions comprising a mixture of at least one cationic surfactant, at least one anionic surfactant, preferably a sulfonated methyl ester and/or a sulfonated fatty acid, and at least one “bridging surfactant” selected from semi-polar nonionic, ethoxylated alkanolamide, and amphoteric/zwitterionic surfactants, and mixtures thereof. More specifically, the invention relates to stable, synergistic mixtures of cationic, anionic, and bridging surfactants that are useful primarily as shampoos and/or body washes. The instant invention further provides both a method for preparing the inventive surfactant compositions, i.e., shampoos, and a method of treating hair with the shampoo compositions. When applied to hair or skin, the surfactant shampoo compositions of the instant invention generally provide for cleaning, conditioning, bodifying, and/or moisturization of the hair or skin.

Abstract: Disclosed are hair care compositions and methods for preparing such compositions which provide the benefits of cleaning, conditioning, curl retention, styling and setting properties simultaneously to hair in the application of a single product. The hair care compositions contain fatty alkyl amine salts, long chain quaternary ammonium salts and mixtures thereof of anionic styling polymers in a non-anionic surfactant system, wherein the surfactant system contains nonionic surfactants, semi-polar nonionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants and mixtures thereof. The styling, setting and conditioning agents are present in the form of fatty alkyl amine salts or fatty quaternary ammonium salts which form anionic styling polymer particulate networks upon dilution in water. These networks are dispersed in the aqueous non-anionic surfactant system and are stabilized and thickened by optional swellable polymer thickening agents.
