Abstract: A method for facilitating the delivery of electronic funds and conveying an explanation of benefits to a service provider is described herein. A claim for payment by a service provider (such as a physician's office) is adjudicated by a third party administrator. An electronic funds transfer (EFT) is generated under a transaction set specification that encodes both payment information as well as an explanation of benefits (EOB). The EOB indicates which charges were approved and/or which were denied. The EOB data is extracted from the EFT and an image is generated containing the text of the EOB. The image is created in a format that is compatible with the online delivery of posted-paper checks. When the service provider logs into its bank to reconcile charges the EFT transaction is noted and the provider clicks on the “view check” link to obtain the EOB information.

Interchange rates vary based on the payment card product offered by an issuing bank in addition to factors relating to how the payment card is processed. The current invention is a method of automatically generating a virtual payment card and/or processing the card in a manner to achieve a target interchange fee.

Abstract: A method of facilitating payments to service providers such as medical practitioners wherein a virtual payment card issued by a card processor is processed by the service provider responsive to a first payment. The merchant identification number of the service provider and its associated acquirer are captured by the card processor. Subsequent payments to the service provider are made directly from the card processor to the acquirer and an authorization confirmation of the direct payment and an explanation of benefits are sent to the service provider which no longer needs to run virtual payment cards through its card processing system.
